Goaltending, Tavares' contract situation among concerns

by Brian Compton @BComptonNHL / NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

NHL.com is providing in-depth analysis for each of its 31 teams throughout August. Today, three questions facing the New York Islanders.

The New York Islanders took a step back last season and failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They should have one of the more formidable top lines in the Eastern Conference, with John Tavares at center between Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle. But trading Travis Hamonic to the Calgary Flames for NHL Draft picks leaves a rather large hole on defense.

by Mike G. Morreale @mikemorrealeNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

The arrival of center Nico Hischier, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, veteran center Brian Boyle and forward Marcus Johansson this offseason has given the New Jersey Devils reason for optimism.

"We're adding players, trying to build the organization the right way, and that takes time," coach John Hynes said. "We weren't happy how competitive our team was last year, so I think the step that needs to be taken this year is that the team has to be an extremely competitive team every night to give our fans an opportunity to be proud of what's on the ice."

Rick Kowalsky, coach of the New Jersey Devils' American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton, couldn't help but be impressed with the amount of talent at development camp this year. At the top of the list was Nico Hischier, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

"You don't want to get too excited at development camp and obviously there are lots of eyes on [Hischier], but there's no question he's a special talent," Kowalsky said. "The speed at which he does everything is what really stands out to me. This year's group is by far the best-skilled group we've had at a development camp."
