NEW YORK -- The Detroit Red Wings scored three unanswered goals, capped by Dominik Kubalik's overtime game-winner on a power play, to beat the New York Rangers, 3-2, on Sunday evening at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers led, 2-0, after the first period, but Matt Luff and Pius Suter scored 5:41 apart in the second to erase the Red Wings' early two-goal deficit. The teams held each other scoreless in the third, then Kubalik capped Detroit's three-goal rally with his sixth goal of the season at 2:43 in the extra frame.
"We deserved this," said Kubalik, who recorded his first game-winning goal with the Red Wings. "We earned it and we're happy that we got the win."
Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves to help Detroit (7-3-2; 16 points) win its third consecutive game, marking the team's longest winning streak since winning five straight from Nov. 24 - Dec. 4, 2021.
"It's a great win," Nedeljkovic said. "That's two back-to-backs now that we've showed up, put together a solid game and came away with two points. It's always great winning on the road."
Andrew Copp, who played 16 games with the Rangers in 2021-22 after being acquired by the club at last season's trade deadline, was recognized on the JumboTron in the opening frame of Sunday's contest. Jordan Oesterle skated in his 300th career NHL game, while Detroit native Austin Czarnik logged 12:45 of ice time in his Red Wings debut.
NEXT UP: Detroit will begin a two-game homestand on Tuesday night, hosting the Montreal Canadiens at Little Caesars Arena.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Derek Lalonde on what he liked from Detroit's overtime victory
"I liked that we didn't get away from our game despite being down, 2-0, after the first. It was actually a pretty good period. Felt a little unfortunate to be down, but I think we showed maturity in not forcing it, not chasing it and sticking to our game."
Kubalik on his strong start this season
"I feel really good. Every day, practice and game I feel more and more comfortable. That's huge for me. I'm just happy, that's all I can say."
Nedeljkovic on what he saw in front of him on Sunday evening
"I just wanted to focus on me today. And just like I do every game, do my thing, try to stop pucks for the boys and give them a chance to win in front of me. They played solid."
