A fourth-round pick (No. 120) by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2009 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-3, 219-pound Chiarot is a fast, physical, stay-at-home defenseman with a hard shot.
After a four-year junior career in the Ontario Hockey League, the Hamilton, Ontario, native spent the better part of three minor-league seasons in the East Coast Hockey League and the American Hockey League. Along the way, he made his NHL debut with the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 2, 2013, a one-off appearance in which he had three hits and a takeaway during a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Chiarot got his first NHL point with an assist on Andrew Ladd's game-winning goal in a 6-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 5, 2014. Chiarot scored his first NHL goal Jan. 3, 2015, in what was, for him, the dream setting of a Hockey Night in Canada game as the Jets beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1. The goal, along with an assist he had on a Matt Halischuk goal, gave Chiarot his first multipoint game in the NHL.
A hand injury that February kept Chiarot out for 16 games before he returned for the final four games of the regular season. Chiarot then saw his first Stanley Cup Playoff action when he appeared in two of Winnipeg's four playoff games against the Anaheim Ducks.
A restricted free agent, Chiarot signed a two-year contract with the Jets on June 18, 2015.
He scored 64 points (12 goals, 52 assists) in 305 games for the Jets. He also had three assists in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Chiarot signed a three-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens on July 4, 2019.
