Diary of Centennial, Winter Classics

NHL.com's Dan Rosen shares experience of covering outdoor games

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

The assignment: Attend and cover two outdoor NHL games that begin less than 24 hours apart in two different countries.

The experience: Unique.

The result: Success -- at least that's what I'm going with, but I might be biased.

When the boss gives you the opportunity to cover the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic in Toronto on Sunday and the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic in St. Louis on Monday you don't say no. You appreciate the chance to do something so few people get to do.

So I did it, and I kept a diary along the way, from the time I arrived at Exhibition Stadium through the time I left Busch Stadium.

TORONTO -- Red Kelly's left hand sagged beneath an enormous diamond-encrusted ring, a Detroit Red Wings rock that seemed to be the size of a puck. But no matter that you almost needed sunglasses to study this celebration of the four Stanley Cup championships he won in the Motor City, Kelly's luster eclipsed the sparkle on his finger.

"And this one," he said Sunday, lifting his right pinkie, "is for the four I won with Toronto."

Auston Matthews makes memories at Centennial Classic

Maple Leafs center scores twice, including game-winner, in his first NHL outdoor game

by Dave McCarthy / NHL.com Correspondent

TORONTO -- Auston Matthews wants to make one thing clear: despite growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona, he has indeed played hockey outside before taking part in the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic.

Maybe not as much as some of his teammates who grew up in colder climates, but living for two years in Ann Arbour, Michigan while he played on the U.S. National Under-17 and 18 teams afforded Matthews plenty of opportunities to skate outside.

Auston Matthews, Maple Leafs win Centennial Classic

Center scores in overtime after Red Wings tie game with 1.1 seconds left

by Tim Campbell @TimNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO -- Auston Matthews scored with 1:20 left in overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a fifth straight win, 5-4 against the Detroit Red Wings in the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic before 40,148 at Exhibition Stadium on Sunday.

Matthews chipped a backhand shot past goalie Jared Coreau for his second goal of the game after defenseman Jake Gardiner's shot went wide of the Red Wings net.

"Definitely one of the best moments in hockey I've ever experienced. It's pretty special," said Matthews, who has 20 goals in his rookie season. "For us to come out and get that win, it was a pretty exciting game and people were on the edge of their seats there in the third period and overtime. It was just really fun to experience this whole thing."
