DETROIT -- Despite not seeing the results they'd like in the win column, the Detroit Red Wings have played much better hockey in their last three games.

After losing, 5-1, to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 3, Detroit has given up just six goals combined in three contests since--with one of those on an empty net--and the Red Wings hope to continue their defensive efficiency as they begin a two-game series against the Nashville Predators Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.
The Wings come into the series at 3-9-2, while the Predators come in at 5-8-0 after losing their last three games, including a 6-1 defeat to the Lightning on Tuesday.
The Predators have suffered offensive struggles of their own lately, producing just three goals during their three-game losing streak, being outscored, 12-3, in that span.
Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said it doesn't behoove his team to get into offensive battles on a nightly basis and said Detroit can't abandon its defensive principles to manufacture offense.
"We're not going win games, 6-5, on a regular basis, we're going to have win games, 2-1, 3-2," Blashill said Wednesday. "We've got to make sure we continue to stick to the foundation that's going to make us successful and that's being a really hard team to play against, being good defensively and continue to get the chances we're getting. It's not like we're not getting any chances. And then find ways to win those close games.
"How do you do that? You make a play at a critical moment, you have a key save at a critical moment, you might win the game on specialty teams. We've just got to stay with it. We can't stray away from these principles defensively and we've still got to find ways to be a little bit better offensively."

Scouting the Predators

• 26-year-old center Filip Forsberg leads the Predators in goals, assists and points with five, six and 11, respectively. Forsberg is one of only seven Predators who's played all 13 games this season, and the former No. 11 overall pick has earned points in each of his last three games against Detroit.
• Predators captain Roman Josi loves playing against the Red Wings, earning 14 points in 24 career meetings with Detroit, including seven points in his last eight games against the Wings. Josi leads Nashville defensemen in points with six and leads all Predators skaters in ice time, averaging 25:43 per game.
• 15-year NHL veteran goalie Pekka Rinne is platooning between the pipes with 25-year-old netminder Juuse Saros this season. Saros has seen the bulk of the action in 2021, with eight starts compared to Rinne's five, but Rinne boasts the better goals-against average and save percentage, with 2.65 and .909, respectively, compared to Saros' 3.68 goals-against average and .881 save percentage.

Red Wings Storylines

• With winger Tyler Bertuzzi on injured reserve since January 31, the onus to produce offense has fallen on others, including captain Dylan Larkin. Larkin leads the Wings with nine points this season and he's had success against the Predators in his career, earning seven points in nine games against Nashville.
• Defenseman Jon Merrill returned to the Red Wings' lineup on February 3 after missing five games because of COVID-19 protocols, and Merrill has solidified Detroit's back end since his return. The 29-year-old former Michigan Wolverines blueliner averages the second-most ice time for Wings' defensemen at 20:21 per game is one of four plus players for Detroit at plus-2.
• With goaltender Jonathan Bernier out since January 30 with an upper-body injury, netminder Thomas Greiss has been pressed into increased duty, starting each of the last six games for Detroit. Greiss only has one win in 10 starts this season, but he's played much better than those results indicate, and has kept the Wings in almost every game he's played.
