The Wings fell to 27-38-11 overall and 13-23-3 on the road while the Canadiens improved to 28-37-12 overall and 18-13-8 at home.
Gustav Nyquist and Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Detroit while Paul Byron (power play), Brendan Gallagher (two) and Alex Galchenyuk (power play) scored for Montreal.
1. Gustav Nyquist: Both Wings coach Jeff Blashill and captain Henrik Zetterberg have mentioned this season that Nyquist has played quite well this season, without necessarily getting rewarded on the score sheet for his efforts. At 4:41 of the first period, Zetterberg spotted an open Nyquist in the right circle and Nyquist beat Montreal goaltender Carey Price with his 20th goal of the season. It is the third time in his career that Nyquist has topped the 20-goal mark. He had 28 goals in the 2013-14 season and 27 in the 2014-15 season. Nyquist finished with a team-high four shots in 14:41 and was plus-1.
Quotable: "If you go back and look at chance after chance, I think he's had a really excellent year. I think his work ethic and compete has been real, real consistent, one of the best on a nightly basis and I think if he has the same year a year from now, he'll score more goals than he scored this year because I do think he's got real chances that he's very capable of scoring on. I've told him time and time again, I'm real proud of the effort that he's had. His effort on a nightly basis has been excellent." - Blashill
2. Tyler Bertuzzi: Bertuzzi is another player who had not been well-rewarded on the score sheet for his level of effort this season. Bertuzzi is a player who lives to go to the net and he did so at 13:41 of the second, poking home the rebound of Nyquist's shot for his fourth goal of the season. Zetterberg was also at the net. Jonathan Ericsson got the second assist. Bertuzzi got the second assist on Nyquist's goal in the first, giving him his sixth multi-point game. After going 27 games without a goal, Bertuzzi has now scored in two straight. At 17:04 of the third period, Charles Hudon hit Zetterberg and Bertuzzi responded quickly. Bertuzzi and Hudon both received roughing minors and 10-minute misconducts.
Quotable: "It's hard for me to really see the play. He hit me, he got two minutes. Bert went after him and he got two. That's all I can say. It's not like he just scores goals and makes plays and works hard. He sticks up for teammates." - Zetterberg
Quotable II: "To be honest, I didn't really see it. I just saw Z down. I realized that DK was chasing him. Maybe I thought it was a dirty hit and I just tried to step in there." - Bertuzzi
Quotable III: "Tyler was a real bright spot I thought again tonight. I thought that line was great. I thought Tyler does all those things that it takes to be a real good hockey player. I think he's going to be a real good player here for a number of years to come. He goes to the net hard, he gets the tip, dirty-type goals that we got to score more of, does tons of things, blocks shots. That line was, I thought, very, very good. I thought the (Frans) Nielsen line was good. Way too many passengers other than that. We need way more from guys, it's not even close to good enough in my opinion.' - Blashill
3. Jared Coreau: On Jan. 16, 2017, Coreau shut out the Canadiens at Joe Louis Arena, 1-0, with Thomas Vanek getting the game-winning goal. Things did not go quite as well Monday at the Bell Centre, Coreau's first start in Montreal. The Canadiens had 15 shots in the first period, almost as many as the 18 they had in the entire shutout in Detroit. At 18:11 of the first, Byron, who had a hat trick in the Canadiens' 10-1 victory over the Wings on Dec. 2, scored a power-play goal to tie the game, 1-1. At 4:27 of the second, Gallagher's shot went off defenseman Danny DeKeyser and into the net for a 2-1 Canadiens lead. Then Gallagher got his second of the game at 9:32 of the second. Galchenyuk scored on the power play at 15:34.
Quotable: "The third one I knew it was behind me. I didn't want to kick my legs back. I did that before and learned from experience that you generally kick the puck in. It's something where I thought I should just fall back, but from the looks of it, that just pushed it in well. The fourth one I'm gonna look at again. I don't know if they get a piece of it or something. I know it hit me, hit my pad, rolled in behind me and then Galchenyuk put it home. I'll look at it again." - Coreau
Quotable II: "Not good enough. He's got to be better than that, that's just the reality of it. In this league in order to win, you probably need to have at least .910 save percentage on a consistent basis in order to win. You probably need to have higher to win on a higher level than that so he's got to be better." - Blashill
