CHICAGO --The Detroit Red Wings fell short in overtime for the second straight game, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night at the United Center.

After Pius Suter opened the scoring midway through the first period with an even-strength goal, captain Dylan Larkin's power-play tally 77 seconds later put Detroit ahead, 2-0. Dominik Kubalik gave the Red Wings a 3-1 advantage heading into the third, but Chicago erased its two-goal deficit in the final frame to force overtime, then scored the game-winner in extra time.
"We have to learn from it," Larkin said. "We have to find a way, when we're up two goals, to keep our foot on the gas."
Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves for Detroit (2-0-2; 6 points), while Filip Hronek registered his 100th career NHL assist with his helper on Larkin's second goal of the season.
Derek Lalonde became the first head coach in franchise history to record at least one point in each of his first four contests with the Red Wings, who extended their season-opening point streak to four consecutive games.
NEXT UP:Detroit will host the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night at Little Caesars Arena.

QUOTABLE

Lalonde on the third period and Detroit's overall play
"The will is there. The want is there. It's just executing and managing the game. Obviously, we didn't do that in the third period."
Lalonde on the learning and growing experiences
"A lot of the egregious mistakes that ended up in the back of our net at the end were direct results of our young guys. The reality is, they gotta go through those things to learn from them and improve on them."
