PITTSBURGH -- When the Pittsburgh Penguins talked Monday, their thoughts and words were on the present.

Their hopes of winning the Stanley Cup for a third consecutive season ended when they lost to the Washington Capitals 2-1 in overtime in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round, and that was the immediate focal point.

Their current run of playoff success is over, but their chances to keep winning in the future aren't.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins' quest for a third straight Stanley Cup championship ended Monday.

The Penguins lost 2-1 in overtime to the Washington Capitals in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round at PPG Paints Arena, their first loss in a Stanley Cup Playoff series since hiring coach Mike Sullivan on Dec. 12, 2015.

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins aren't used to this.

They were the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion, had won nine straight series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and felt they had the right combination to win a third consecutive Stanley Cup, something no NHL team has done since the New York Islanders won four straight from 1980-83.

Goaltender loses first playoff series of NHL career

PITTSBURGH -- Matt Murray sat at his locker, still in his pads, staring across the Pittsburgh Penguins locker room on Monday.

As his teammates filtered out, several stopped to give the 23-year-old goaltender a tap on the shoulder or a fist bump. He had just allowed a goal to forward Evgeny Kuznetsov at 5:27 of overtime in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round that sent the Washington Capitals to the conference final and the Penguins to the offseason.

PITTSBURGH -- Evgeny Kuznetsov scored at 5:27 of overtime, and the Washington Capitals advanced to the Eastern Conference Final with a 2-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of the second round at PPG Paints Arena on Monday.

Alex Ovechkin passed to Kuznetsov, who split the defense before beating goaltender Matt Murray five-hole on a breakaway. Kuznetsov had four points (two goals, two assists) in the past two games.
