You Don't Know Jack - Entry 2
by Jack Adams
If you really think about it, life mainly consists of wins and losses. There's no in between - you win or you lose. However, the outcome of these lively contests are sometimes completely out of our control. And quite frankly, the outcomes can turn out to be much worse than ever anticipated. With Christmas approaching, try to think about the bigger picture, and realize that there are millions of people that have to deal with these losses during a time that's supposed to be enjoyable for everyone.
Hockey games and Christmas are a lot alike. The preparation, the anticipation, the buildup of excitement. The importance of family and team, and your actual family getting together on the holiday. The high of a goal, or opening a present, and the sense of togetherness of the team at a game and a family at the holidays, it's all relatable. On the outside looking in, fans, spectators, the media, you name it, would think most players get to enjoy the holiday with their families. For some, it's not that simple. Many players and coaches have to make sacrifices and be away from their families on Christmas, and for many players, going home is a privilege. Luckily for me, I've been fortunate enough to spend it with my family, but for a number of my teammates and ex-teammates, they are not as lucky. So enjoy the day with your family, tell your friends and family you love them and cherish every moment. I know many other players might share the same message.
Like I touched upon earlier, life is all about winning and losing. Balance is critical; there will be ups and downs, but you need to have the strength to be able to stay centered. A lot of people have experienced wins this year and many have experienced losses. But there's one thing I've realized throughout the past few months: no matter what, Life does go on. As for me, I've started to learn how to find a "new normal" in spite of what's happened to me in my life. And to me, finding that new normal could be considered a win.
Maybe after all, it isn't all about winning and losing. In sports, business, politics, everyone gets so caught up in success and winning. People don't have patience and always expect results. Well, it isn't that easy. Maybe people need to realize that losing happens and how you respond to that loss is what defines you as a human being. Not getting too high from a victory, or too down on yourself following a loss, but rather staying centered. Because at the end of the day, there has to be more to life than just a win or loss, right?
The Christmas season reminds us of a message that holds all through the year: winning and losing aren't as important as caring about one another - showing compassion and decency to everyone. That's the message I'm holding onto.
Have a great holiday.
In 15 games this season with the Dutchmen, Adams has nine points, including five goals, which is tied for the team lead. He has scored two game winning goals, is plus-8 and leads Union in penalty minutes with 25.
