Tyler Toffoli had two of the four goals, one into the empty net at 16:26 of the third period.
Derek Forbort and Nic Dowd had the other two Kings' goals.
1. Mike Green: Green is looking more comfortable in his second season with the Wings. Green pinched in and received a perfect pass from Luke Glendening, scoring at 7:13 of the first period to tie the game at 1. It was Green's seventh goal of the season, moving him into second place on the team behind Dylan Larkin in goals. Larkin has nine. Green reached the seven-goal mark in 31 games after scoring seven in 74 games last season.
Quotable: "I thought that line played really well tonight. I thought they were doing the simple things and grinding away. Glenny made a great play. They were concentrating on getting pucks to the net but he didn't just throw it there. He made a great pass. I think we've got to have that mind frame to find that open areas and get those pucks there. I think the guys did a great job of it tonight. Obviously we've got to bear down a little bit around the net." - Green
2. First period: First periods have been a challenge of late for the Wings. The Arizona Coyotes held them without a shot for more than 14 minutes on Tuesday and the Wings managed just two shots in the first against the Kings. Both of those shots were from Green, one of which was his goal. Part of the issue is the power play. Although the Wings had two opportunities in the first, they managed just one shot. Overall, they finished 0-for-4 on the power play.
Quotable: "I don't think it's effort. In a game like this, obviously the first shot on net there goes in for them but stuff like that's going to happen. You've got to find a way to battle through. I don't think it's effort. I think we spent some time in their zone, we just can't seem to find a way to put pucks on net. So maybe that's more execution on the players to get shots through." - Gustav Nyquist
Quotable II: "I don't think there's any doubt we need to find a way to get the puck inside and get the puck around the net and create more chaos. Our problem is, in my opinion, we don't have enough set-up time, whether it's from not winning enough battles when we're facing pressure, whether it's from self-induced turnovers, we're just not spending enough time in the zone and when we do finally get it set up, it's obviously in the league, teams do a good job of trying to keep you outside. We got to find a way to get to the inside." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill
3. Jeff Zatkoff: Kings goaltender Jeff Zatkoff, a Detroit, Mich. native, played in his eight game of the season and third career game against his hometown team. The previous two games came when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. After making 17 saves, Zatkoff earned his third win against the Wings and his second win of the season.
Quotable: "It was great to start our final game here. I played here in pee-wee and bantam all the way through losing two CCHA finals with Miami, so it was nice to get a win here. Honestly, I think I have more memories from watching games here than playing - it is a great rink and I'm going to miss it." - Zatkoff
