The Detroit Red Wings were in search of an offensively gifted, right-shot defenseman able to add some punch to the power play. Green, one of the most coveted players available, fit that description, so the unrestricted free agent signed a three-year contract with the Red Wings on July 1, 2015 after 10 seasons with the Washington Capitals.
Among the game's finest man-advantage quarterbacks, Green has a powerful slap shot and good offensive instincts. In his first season in Detroit, Green led Red Wings defensemen in points (35) and his 20 power-play points were tied for second with center Pavel Datsyuk.

Selected by the Capitals in the first round (No. 29) of the 2004 NHL Draft, the Calgary native played four full seasons with Saskatoon of the Western Hockey League.
After bouncing between Washington and Hershey, the Capitals' American Hockey League affiliate, in 2005-06, Green blossomed in 2007-08 with 18 goals, second among NHL defensemen, and 56 points while playing all 82 games.
From 2008-10 Green found his offensive form in Washington. He finished with 31 goals and 73 points in 2008-09, and 19 goals and 76 points the following season. In each season, Green was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team and was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the League's best defenseman.
On Feb. 14, 2009, Green set an NHL record for the longest goal-scoring streak by a defenseman at eight games, breaking the record of seven set by Mike O'Connell of the Boston Bruins, who scored in seven straight in 1983-84.
Green's run of success continued in Detroit. He had his first NHL hat trick against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 17, 2016 and the following season led Red Wings defensemen in scoring (33 points) despite not playing after March 20 because of an injury. He played 43 games in 2018-19, a season cut short because of a virus, and had 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 48 games for Detroit before he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers on Feb. 24, 2020. He was projected to be out 3-4 weeks after spraining his MCL during a 3-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Feb. 26, his second game with the Oilers.
