The Detroit Red Wings made their presence felt at the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship from May 12 - 28 in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.

Joe Veleno, along with Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman, assistant coach Alex Tanguay and equipment manager Paul Boyer all earned a gold medal with Team Canada, while Moritz Seider won a silver medal with Team Germany.

Additionally, Seider and Team Czech Republic's Dominik Kubalik were named to the 2023 Media All-Star Team by the IIHF Directorate.

UNITED STATES

Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde and forward prospect Carter Mazur helped the United States place fourth with a 7-1-2-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in the championship.

Last Tuesday (May 23), Mazur contributed a pair of assists in a 4-3 overtime win over Team Sweden in the preliminary round.

Two days later, the 21-year-old had a plus-2 rating in 16:00 of ice time in a 3-0 shutout victory over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. Mazur registered 15:29 of ice time in last Saturday's (May 27) 4-3 overtime loss to Germany in the semifinals, then logged 11:34 of ice time as his country fell to Latvia, 4-3, in overtime in Sunday's bronze medal game.

The Jackson, Mich., native earned four points on one goal and three assists in 10 tournament games.

CANADA

Canada came out on top at the 17-day tournament with a 7-1-1-1 record.

Veleno was suspended for five games by the IIHF World Championship Disciplinary Panel for an incident during a 3-2 loss to Switzerland on May 21.

As a result, the 23-year-old forward did not participate in Canada's final two preliminary-round games as well as the quarterfinals, semifinals and gold medal contest. Veleno finished the tournament with five points (two goals, three assists) in five games.

Canada won its 28th World Championship title on Sunday by defeating Germany, 5-2, in the gold medal game.

SWEDEN

Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren were steady contributors throughout the international competition, helping Team Sweden place sixth with a 5-1-1-1 record.

Last Monday (May 22), Raymond scored a goal and tallied an assist while Berggren recorded a helper in a 4-1 preliminary-round win over Denmark. The next day, Berggren had another assist and Raymond registered 19:18 of ice time in the overtime loss to the U.S.

Raymond tallied an assist in last Thursday's (May 25) 3-1 quarterfinals loss to Latvia.

In eight tournament games, Raymond had two goals and six assists while Berggren recorded two goals and five helpers.

GERMANY

After dropping their first three preliminary-round games, Seider and Germany rallied for a 5-1-0-4 record, good for second place at the World Championship.

Last Tuesday, Seider logged 20:00 of ice time to help his country blank France, 5-0, in the preliminary round. The 22-year-old defenseman registered 12:12 of ice time in a 3-1 quarterfinals win over Switzerland two days later, then paced Germany in ice time (27:04) and had a plus-2 rating in the semifinals game against the U.S.

Seider recorded a pair of assists in the gold medal loss to Canada. He finished tournament with one goal, four helpers and a plus-6 rating in 10 games.

"We haven't done this in 70 years, so nobody can take that away from us," Seider

"We made history today. The team made history and I'm really proud of every one of us."

FINLAND

Olli Maatta helped Team Finland (5-0-1-2 record) place seventh in the tournament.

The 28-year-old blueliner had a plus-1 rating in 16:23 of ice time in a 7-1 preliminary-round win over Denmark last Tuesday, then registered 15:11 of ice time two days later in a 4-1 quarterfinal loss to Canada.

Maatta notched five assists in eight tournament games.

CZECH REBPULIC

After a 2022-23 NHL season in which he set career highs in assists (25) and games played (81), Kubalik played a key role for the Czech Republic (4-0-1-3 record) en route to its eighth-place finish.

Kubalik registered 18:22 of ice time in a 3-1 loss to Canada in the preliminary round last Tuesday, then logged 20:53 of ice time in the shutout loss to the U.S. last Thursday.

The 27-year-old forward led the tournament with eight goals and ranked second in scoring with 12 points in eight games.
