SAN JOSE-- The San Jose Sharks have already clinched a playoff berth but for one night, the Detroit Red Wings were the better team.
The Wings withstood the Sharks' offensive pressure and shooting mentality to earn a 3-2 victory at the SAP Center on Monday night.

Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Christoffer Ehn (shorthanded) scored for the Red Wings.
Evander Kane (power play) and Tomas Hertl scored for the Sharks.
Detroit netminder Jonathan Bernier made 39 saves. San Jose goaltender Martin Jones had 20 saves.
The Wings improved to 28-38-10 while the Sharks fell to 43-24-9. Up next for the Wings is a Thursday night game in Buffalo against the Sabres.
The Sharks will host the Chicago Blackhawks at the SAP Center on Thursday.
1. Dylan Larkin/Christoffer Ehn: After going a season-long five games without a point, Larkin did the majority of the work on the overtime winner scored by Anthony Mantha in Las Vegas Saturday night. Early in Monday's game, Mantha returned the favor, getting the puck to Larkin for a breakaway. Larkin's goal gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the first. Tyler Bertuzzi picked up the second assist. Larkin has 28 goals, briefly tied with Andreas Athanasiou for first on the team. It was Larkin's first goal in six games, with his last coming March 2 at Arizona. The longer goal drought has been for Ehn, who always thinks defense first. But with the Wings shorthanded, Luke Glendening took the puck into the Sharks zone, went behind the net and passed to Ehn in the slot. Ehn had time and beat Jones at 8:35 of the third for his third goal of the season and first in 15 games. His last goal was Feb. 10 at Chicago. Darren Helm got the second assist. Larkin finished with 27 shifts for 19:08, had two shots, one hit, three takeaways, was 9-of-19 in face-offs and was plus-1. Ehn finished with 16 shifts for 10:28, had one shot, one hit, was 0-for-1 in face-offs and was plus-1.

Quotable: "A little bit of a bobbled puck in the neutral zone and I had a lot of speed coming through, so Mo (Mantha) did a great job finding me and coming in on a goalie at that angle, I like to do that move. Tried to get him to open up and I did and say daylight through his legs. So it was a great play by Mo and a good start for our team." - Larkin

Quotable II: "Chris has played hard for us all year and he's a real smart defensive player. What a play by Glenny, though. Glenny was awesome tonight. The sacrifice that he shows. He plays through pain. Just amazing. The ability -- he was tired at the end of a shift but he was still able to battle, to get down there and center that to Ehner. What a play." - Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill
Quotable III: "It was awesome to see. (Ehn) works hard every night and PKs and blocks shots and plays the right way, so he's got great hands, too, and you saw on the finish." - Larkin
2. Jonathan Bernier: It's a tall task for any goaltender against the offensively gifted Sharks, who average 3.55 goals per game, which is third in the league. San Jose's All-Star defenseman Brent Burns is enough to keep any goalie busy. Burns came into the game with 270 shots this season, the only defenseman in the NHL's top eight. Bernier stopped all four of his shots in the first period. Bernier also had to make saves on Joonas Donskoi in the high slot at the five-minute mark and on Melker Karlsson from the slot at 13:48 among his 11 first-period stops. Bernier was back to work in the second period, which included a strong San Jose power play. While Athanasiou was in the box for tripping, Bernier stopped Burns and then prevented former Wings forward Gustav Nyquist from poking home the rebound at 6:23. At 11:08, Kevin Labanc had a chance from the right circle but Bernier was there. At 17:24 of the second, Bernier collected Timo Meier's backhand chance. In all, Bernier had 12 saves in the second. A desperate Sharks team came on hard in the third. After the Wings got their shorthanded goal, Bernier had no chance when Kane put the rebound into the net at 8:55. Tomas Hertl scored with 4.7 seconds left with the extra attacker.

Quotable: "Obviously it's refreshing. At the end of the day, when you put the effort in at some point, you're gonna be rewarded, and I feel like I've been working hard all year and like I mentioned from last game, as you play more, your reads are better, your control of rebounds is better. You feel more comfortable in net. We've been going back and forth and obviously, it's nice to have that. Just going in there and not really thinking about anything. Just playing." - Bernier
Quotable II: "It's great to see. I think he's been consistent all year in how he's played and how he's prepared for every game. To see him come out here on the road and in a tough environment to get the win here is great for him." - Larkin
Quotable III: "One thing certainly of note, both those games our goalies have been excellent, and it's a league where you need excellent goaltending to win. It's hard to win without it and both goalies were excellent here and in Vegas. In this game here, I thought Bernier did a good job of hanging in there. They do as good a job of shooting pucks and tipping pucks and being hard around the net as anybody in the league. They've got a great plan for the way that they're built. I've always been impressed with Pete DeBoer's teams. He find ways to plan around the talent he has. Certainly they're as hard around the net as anybody is. I thought Bernie hung in there and fought through traffic and was able to smother pucks and those types of things." - Blashill

  1. Andreas Athanasiou/Taro Hirose: Larkin's tie with Athanasiou did not last. At 15:37 of the second period, Taro Hirose intercepted the puck and delivered it to the swift-skating Athanasiou for a breakaway. Athanasiou buried the puck past Jones for his 29th of the season. While it was a typical Athanasiou breakaway goal, the assist is becoming typical of Hirose. The rookie forward from Michigan State extended his assist streak to four games, meaning he has one in every game he has played with the Red Wings. Athanasiou had another breakaway at 3:59 of the third but this time, Jones was ready. Athanasiou finished with 23 shifts for 20:33, had a team-high six shots, one giveaway, one takeaway, was 7-of-13 in face-offs and was even. Hirose finished with 19 shifts for 14:39, had one hit, one giveaway, two takeaways, one blocked shot and was plus-1.

Quotable: "I think the guys I'm playing with are making it easy for me to adjust to the pro level and the game out there. When you're playing with a guy like Dubs and the speed he has, you just got to get him the puck and he gets chances." - Hirose
Quotable II: "Great player, obviously great vision. It's all about getting experience and things like that but so far I'm really impressed." - Bernier on Hirose

Quotable III: "The last two games, especially, they've (Larkin and Athanasiou) both been super dangerous. I think Larks took a little bit coming back from the injury but now he's really going. He's super dangerous with the puck. Having both of them at center, when they get the puck in the middle of the ice, they're dynamic. And they can skate away from you and they can push our pace. Those two have been a real bright spot the last bit. I thought Anthony Mantha was excellent again tonight. That's two nights in a row, he's been excellent. When he skates like that, he's an excellent player. He just needs to keep doing it on a nightly basis." - Blashill
