Forsberg, Hornqvist among players to earn gold medal after early playoff exits

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Patric Hornqvist won't hoist the Stanley Cup above his head for a third consecutive season, but he's not ending it without a consolation prize.

Hornqvist and the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017, were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Washington Capitals in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round, but the 31-year-old forward won a gold medal with Sweden after a 3-2 shootout win against Switzerland at the 2018 IIHF World Championship on Sunday.

The 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark is a showcase for NHL players of the present, past and future who are not involved in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The 16-nation tournament began May 4 and runs through May 20.

More than 100 NHL players are involved in this year's tournament, with star-studded Sweden looking to repeat as champion. Stars include Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, Canada's captain, and Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane, the United States captain.

Most of the World Championship games will be broadcast by NHL Network, including every United States game. The NHL Network schedule is here.

HERNING, Denmark -- Quintin Hughes has turned Patrick Kane into a fan at the 2018 IIHF World Championship.

The Chicago Blackhawks forward isn't just playing for the U.S., he's doing some scouting, and he has a bit of advice for Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman: Select Hughes, a left-shot defenseman, in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft, which will be held at American Airlines Center in Dallas on June 22-23.

Texier using World Championship as next step toward goal of reaching NHL

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Alexandre Texier isn't focused on becoming the face of hockey in France.

The Columbus Blue Jackets forward prospect is working on becoming an NHL player first.

Texier (6-foot, 187 pounds) was selected by the Blue Jackets in the second round (No. 45) of the 2017 NHL Draft. He is the first France-born player drafted from a team in Ligue Magnus, France's top professional league, which was founded in 1906.
