MONTREAL -- One of these nights, things will start to break in the Red Wings' favor. Unfortunately, Monday against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre was not one of those nights.
As usual, the Red Wings started the game holding their own, but a penalty shot goal by Jonathan Drouin at 7:13 of the first period swung momentum Montreal's way and the Canadiens didn't look back, cruising to a 7-3 victory.

It appeared the Wings caught a break when the Canadiens started backup netminder Antti Niemi instead of all-world goalie Carey Price, but Niemi was hardly challenged as Detroit didn't test him until the third period.
Andreas Athanasiou (two goals) and Thomas Vanek (power play) were the Wings' goal scorers. It was Athanasiou's first two goals of the season and Vanek's first tally of the campaign.

Jonathan Drouin (two goals: penalty shot, power play), Thomas Plekanec, playing in his 1,000th career game, former Red Wings forward Tomas Tatar, Brendan Gallagher, Charles Hudon and Paul Byron scored for the Habs.
Montreal improved to 3-1-1 on the year while Detroit remains winless this season, dropping to 0-4-2.
Detroit's next opportunity to get a win will be Thursday night when it faces the Tampa Bay Lightning on the road.
1. Jimmy Howard: Howard deserved a better fate despite giving up five goals on 20 shots. He was relieved by Jonathan Bernier at 15:25 of the second period after Hudon's goal made it 5-1. The Red Wings made some mistakes in their own end, allowing the Canadiens to storm the net. Montreal was relentless, while Detroit turned the puck over multiple times.
Quotable: "We talked a lot about offense at the beginning of the year. We got to figure out how to defend better. We got to make sure we do a better job of making people go through us to get to our net." -- Wings coach Jeff Blashill
Quotable II: "I think everyone just has to look themselves in the mirror and see what they can do better out there. There's so many different instances on their goals, we're not playing through guys, we're not getting pucks deep, we're not blocking shots. Everyone's involved, myself included. We have to do it right to have a chance to win games. That can't happen. Just because you get a couple goals against you, you can't just fold up and pack it in. We're leaving our goalies out to dry, too. The goals are basically tap-ins." -- Gustav Nyquist
Quotable III: "We got to show some pride in here. Enough is enough. Bottom line, we just got to be better. Bottom line is we just got to go to work. We don't even give ourselves a chance right now. We hang our goalies out to dry, they got backdoor tap-ins left and right. It's tough to win hockey games like that. There's only one way to do it and that's do it right and everything starts with hard work. Right now, we're not working hard enough to create our own chances." -- Niklas Kronwall

  1. Andreas Athanasiou: Perhaps the only encouraging news coming out of this game is that Athanasiou scored two goals. Throughout this season, the fleet-skating Athanasiou has been in prime position to score, but the puck has not bounced his way. Known as a streaky scorer, Athanasiou hopes his two-goal performance will be the catalyst to go on a goal-scoring tear, something a shaky Detroit offense desperately needs.

Quotable: "I think confidence matters. We don't have enough of it with our team but certainly for those individuals (Athanasiou and Vanek), it will help. Listen, I'll be able to show tons of clips where we did it right and we were really good. This isn't a talent thing, it's not about not being good enough. It's about doing it right. When we do it right, we're good. I can show those clips and when we don't do it right, I've already showed a number of them in between periods. You're not going to win that way. You're not going to win when teams are coming at you in droves with rushes the way they did. Let's get better Wednesday." -- Blashill
3. Tomas Tatar: After he was traded to Vegas at last year's trade deadline, Tatar never adjusted to being a member of the Golden Knights. A preseason trade to the Canadiens seems to be the remedy to get the high-scoring winger on track. Against the Red Wings, Tatar had a goal and two assists and was plus-2 in 17:13 of ice time. He was second star of the game. In five games played, the former Wings forward has three goals and four assists and is plus-5.
Quotable: "It is (strange playing against the Red Wings). It's special for me for sure to see old teammates. It's kind of weird but it's just a business. We know we have to do it. We are winning now so things are going well but we are still start of the season, so we have to build up a lot of stuff. Obviously, it feels good." -- Tatar
