COLUMBUS --A win to kick off their four-game road trip was well within reach for the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night. But surrendering two goals in the final five minutes spoiled that plan as Detroit fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-3, at Nationwide Arena.
"We got to play better hockey than we've been playing," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "I think we've gotten away with a little bit and have won a few games in the last little bit when we haven't been playing quite good enough."

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin acknowledged that Detroit let one get away on the road.
"For us to become a good team, we have to learn to put this game away," Larkin said.

With the loss, Detroit dropped to 8-7-2 on the year while the Blue Jackets improved to 8-5-0.
It was a relatively quiet first period of action, as both teams combined to attempt just 17 shots on goal. The Blue Jackets threatened with 7:29 left in the period but saw their best chance to that point thwarted by rookie Moritz Seider, who made a diving recovery to break up a shot from defenseman Jake Bean.
At the 5:15 mark, Larkin opened the scoring for the Red Wings with his seventh goal of the season. It was set up by a sensational backdoor pass from Lucas Raymond, who knocked the puck out of mid-air, retrieved it and made a no-look assist that led to an open net for Larkin.

Detroit extended its lead to 2-0 when Michael Rasmussen found the back of the net with 15:37 to play in the second period. Assisted by Vladislav Namestnikov and Filip Hronek, the former first-round pick scored for the first time in 28 games, dating back to last season.
Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss stood tall and made multiple stops to counter a flurry of shots from Cole Sillinger midway through the second period. Overall, he finished the night with 33 saves.

Columbus made it a one-goal game, 2-1, when Boone Jenner scored to cut into Detroit's lead with 6:53 remaining in the second period. Less than two minutes later, the Blue Jackets knotted things up when Adam Boqvist buried a rebound on the side of the net, his first goal as a Blue Jacket.
Overall, Columbus outshot Detroit, 17-7, in the second period and finished the night with 38 shots on goal compared to the Red Wings' 27.
Detroit held steady on defense to open the third period, then later cashed in on offense when Raymond notched his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Tyler Bertuzzi, which propelled Detroit to a 3-2 advantage at the 13:31 mark.

At the time, it appeared Detroit had set itself up to depart Columbus with two points. But rookie Yegor Chinakhov got loose on a breakaway and scored his first career goal with 4:18 remaining to tie the score again, 3-3.
Columbus took its first lead of the night (4-3) three minutes later off a wrist shot by Grosse Pointe, Mich., native Zach Werenski. Alexandre Texier then took advantage of an empty Detroit net with three seconds left in the game to complete the game's scoring.
"We gave up too many chances for us to be a really good team," Blashill said. "We have to eliminate the number of chances we give up and make sure we are on top of it and more on top of it defensively."
The Red Wings will look to get back into the win column Tuesday night as they continue their road trip with a visit to the American Airlines Center to face the Dallas Stars. Puck drop is set for 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT, with broadcast coverage on ESPN+ and Hulu, and the Red Wings Radio Network.
