NHL's inaugural World Gaming Championship a success

Finland's Tammenpaa sweeps best-of-3 final to win $50,000

LAS VEGAS -- Erik Tammenpaa needed one win to guarantee a spot in the finals of the inaugural NHL World Gaming Championship. He won with ease, and it didn't stop there.

Tammenpaa won the first two games of the best-of-3 final against David Roebuck to win the inaugural NHL esports championship at Allied Esports Arena at the Luxor Hotel & Casino.

Paralympian learned finer points of hockey from playing video game

DeQuebec, who won gold medal with U.S., can relate to Esports phenomenon

Six years ago, Marine Corps gunnery sergeant Ralph DeQuebec lost both legs when he was wounded in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device. The aftershock included a mild traumatic brain injury followed by partial amputation of his left little finger and right thumb, pneumonia and at least 30 surgeries at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany before returning to the United States.

It was during rehabilitation when his life after combat went into limbo. The Purple Heart recipient was away from family and friends, trying to figure out what to do, trying to create a new identity.

Six regional finalists will face off in Las Vegas on June 19 for $50,000 grand prize

NEW YORK -- The 2018 NHL Gaming World Championship™ Final will be streamed live on Twitch.tv/NHL on Tuesday, June 19, beginning at 4 p.m. ET, the National Hockey League announced today. Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor Hotel and Casino will host the final stage of the tournament that will feature the top EA SPORTS NHL® 18 players from around the world.

Nicola "FoolX90" Bruna (Canada winner), John "JohnWayne90" Casagranda (U.S. winner), Matthew "YungGren" Grenier (Canada runner-up), Arttu "Artuzio" Mustila (Europe winner), David "JrPens91" Roebuck (U.S. runner-up) and Erik "I_Eki_I" Tammenpää (Europe runner-up) will compete in a round-robin style format to open the tournament. The top two competitors at the end of the round-robin portion then face off in a best-of-three final to determine the 2018 NHL Gaming World Champion™. The Champion will receive a $50,000 USD cash prize, take home the tournament trophy and attend the 2018 NHL Awards™ presented by Hulu.

NEW YORK/TORONTO - In less than a month, the six remaining participants of the 2018 NHL Gaming World Championship™ will converge in Las Vegas as their global journey reaches its final competition.

Two finalists each from Canada, the European Union and the United States will meet on Tuesday, June 19, at the new Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor Hotel and Casino in a round-robin style tournament. Two gamers will emerge from the round-robin play to face off in a best-of-three final round to determine the 2018 NHL Gaming World Champion™. Players earned their place in the World Finals through the Regional Finals, administered and run by FACEIT, the official tournament platform of the 2018 NHL Gaming World Championship™.

One tough 'cookie': OSU student aiming for gaming world title

Easter dinner was in full swing and the Gutkoskis, of Lewis Center, were enjoying the day.

Matt Gutkoski, however, had a slight issue. Time was ticking, there was an important hockey game he needed to play and the 20-year old Ohio State marketing student excused himself with an awkward explanation that included a video game in the basement.

"I was at Easter dinner and I was like, 'Hey guys, I'm really sorry, but I've got to leave right now,'" said Gutkoski, who became one of eight online competitors who qualified for the American regional in the 2018 NHL Gaming World Championships on Sunday at NBC Sports studio in Stamford, Conn. "It's hard to explain, because I was like, 'Hey, I'm going to play a video game.' It was like, 'Uh … OK.'"

Altmeyer turned 24 and graduated from Allegheny College on Saturday and is one of eight finalists who will play in the United States regional final of the NHL GWC at NBC Studios in Stamford, Connecticut on Sunday.

Dimitri Bastounis has the tournament of a lifetime this weekend, but the Winnipeg resident's focus is divided on a different hockey game.

Bastounis, a Winnipeg Jets fan, is one of the eight participants in the Canadian Regional Final of the NHL Gaming World Championship this weekend in Toronto. But he's also focused in his favorite team's Game 7 against the Nashville Predators in the Western Conference Second Round on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS).
