PITTSBURGH-- Sometimes the process can be better but the end result remains the same.
The Red Wings were able to get the lead and had their chances but the Pittsburgh Penguins emerged with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena on Hockey Day in America.

Valtteri Filppula scored the lone goal for the Wings.
Sam Lafferty, Patric Hornqvist (two), Kris Letang (power play) and Sidney Crosby scored for the Penguins.
Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard (2-22-2) had 12 saves. Jonathan Bernier, who replaced Howard in the second period, had 18 stops.
Pittsburgh netminder Matt Murray (17-7-5) made 27 saves.
Up next for the Wings (14-43-4) is a return home to face the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday night.
The Penguins (36-15-6) will host the Toronto Maple Leafs at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.
1. Valtteri Filppula: In the first period, Andreas Athanasiou got the puck going into the offensive zone. Tyler Bertuzzi got it and did a quick give-and-go, which resulted in Filppula scoring his fifth of the season. It was also his first goal since his 999th game on Jan. 31 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Bertuzzi ended up with the only assist. Filppula finished with 23 shifts for 17:17, had one shot, one blocked shot, was 3-of-8 in face-offs and was plus-1.

Quotable: "It's tough the way it happens. You don't want to see it when they score multiple goals back to back. I thought we had a good first period, and they're up 2-1, so we can't have that happen where we play good and they still get two cheap goals, or two goals that . . . you know, we're working so hard for our goals, we have to make them work way harder for their goals." - Dylan Larkin
Quotable II: "I think the chances after two were 10-9 us, or 10-9 them. We had the puck more than we have. We did more good things than we have. Sometimes the score indicates the game, sometimes it doesn't. I don't think it did tonight." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill
2. Jimmy Howard/Jonathan Bernier: It is always difficult for the backup goalie to remain sharp when he isn't playing as often. You can practice all you want but it is not the same as playing games. Howard is now in that situation as Bernier has ascended to being the No. 1 goalie. Although the Wings got the game's first goal, it was all Pittsburgh thereafter. Lafferty got the first goal of the game at 7:58 of the first on a rebound scramble in front of the net. Letang's power-play blast from the left point made it past Howard as he was screened by both Hornqvist and Bryan Rust at 14:35. Hornqvist got his first goal at 2:53 of the second. When Crosby scored at 7:55, it marked the end of Howard's day. Howard allowed four goals on 16 shots. Bernier came in and didn't have much more luck against Hornqvist. At 11:53, Brandon Tanev found Hornqvist heading alone toward the net and Hornqvist scored again. The Lafferty goal was changed to Hornqvist and then back to Lafferty after the game, denying Hornqvist his hat trick.

Quotable: "We'll regroup. I didn't talk to them. I never talk after losses. We'll come on Tuesday. We have tomorrow off. We'll see what we got to get better at. We'll show them that. We'll see what we did well and try to win a game on Tuesday. It's the same message I've had for a while here. We got to keep working to get better. We're either going to take steps forward or we're going to take steps backwards, every single day. Like I said, in a lot of ways, although the score doesn't indicate it, some of you might not think so, I thought there was a lot things we took steps forward today." - Blashill
Quotable II: "I think it shows a lot about people's character, guys character, it's easy to be happy do things the right way when things are going well, but it's hard when things are going poorly and it's easy to point fingers, but we're all part of the problem and we need to look within ourselves and see how we can be part of the solution." - Luke Glendening
Quotable III: "It's about the last thing I'm worrying about right now. Yeah it would help the team, yeah I gotta take some responsibility and score some goals and produce offensively but we are in a stretch right now where we have to find a way out of this, and find a way as a team to generate more offensively. We had our chances tonight but we gotta make sure they go in, and make sure we're not coming into the locker room after games and it's 5-1. We only scored one goal as a team. We're leaving the rest to our goaltender, and it's not fair to those guys." - Larkin
3. Filip Hronek/Lack of offense: It's been a rough couple of days for Filip Hronek, who did not get the call Saturday in Boston after he was high-sticked and the Bruins scored quickly afterward. On Sunday, Hronek was trying to protect the net and Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson fired a shot that hit Hronek in the side of the head at 7:24 of the second period. Hronek was able to skate off the ice with a little assistance from Anthony Mantha and Mike Green before heading right to the dressing room. As the third period started, the Red Wings announced that Hronek would not return to the game. On Saturday, the Wings lost defenseman Trevor Daley to an upper-body injury so Madison Bowey returned to the lineup. There was no update on Hronek after the game. The Wings have had trouble scoring all season but have only managed 13 goals in the 10 games since the All-Star break/bye.
Quotable: "Guys are gripping their sticks tight, it's been…I can speak for myself; it's been a while, a lot guys pressing, we had our chances and they put theirs in and we didn't and at the end of the day, it's 5-1." - Glendening
Quotable II: "I just don't think we have enough sustained offense where we're in the zone and cycling, creating real looks. We had some tonight for sure but we need to wear teams down in the o-zone." - Larkin
Quotable III: "Obviously we're not a confident bunch. Our chances might not equate the same because we're not scoring at the same rate. All I know is we played way better hockey than we have. At different times we've lost and the score is the score. The score is what it is. That's not the way we do this. Obviously, they're a good team, too. I thought we came out. I thought we played with the puck way more. I thought we played hard, I thought we competed super hard. Structurally, I thought we were pretty good. We got our chances, we didn't score. They got their chances, they scored." - Blashill
