DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today acquired a third-round draft pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Brendan Smith.

Smith, 27, has logged 291 games for the Red Wings over the past six seasons, totaling 67 points (15-52-67) and 281 penalty minutes. He has also added six points (2-4-6) in 27 career postseason games. Smith has skated in 33 games with Detroit this season, picking up five points (2-3-5) and 34 penalty minutes. The 6-foot- 2, 211-lb., blueliner also appeared in 152 games with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins from 2010-13, registering 86 points (27-59-86) and 263 penalty minutes. A native of Mimico, Ontario, Smith spent three seasons at the University of Wisconsin (2007-10) prior to turning pro, notching 87 points (26-61-87) and 177 penalty minutes. He was named a finalist for the NCAA's Hobey Baker Award and was the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Defensive Player of the Year.
The Red Wings currently have 10 draft picks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, including three picks in the third and two picks in the sixth round.
