DETROIT --Emotional was a word that was used several times during the postgame press conference after the Detroit Red Wings' 5-4 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken Kraken on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, and it was easy to understand why.

On Wednesday evening, the Red Wings sent Filip Hronek and a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft to the Vancouver Canucks for a conditional first-round selection and second-round pick in 2023. Then on Thursday morning, Detroit traded Tyler Bertuzzi to the Boston Bruins for a 2024 first-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2025.
"Tough as a team when you see good players leave, obviously," Ben Chiarot said. "An emotional day for the team, but you can't let that creep into your game. I thought it did a little bit in the beginning, it wasn't the cleanest game we've ever played. But overall, we put up a good fight to take it to overtime."
Chiarot, Adam Erne, Jonatan Berggren and Jake Walman scored for Detroit, which rallied from a 3-1 first-period deficit but eventually fell in the extra frame.
"Every game for us right now is a playoff game," Walman said. "Stuff happens outside the rink that we can't control, but we're playing hard and not giving up. This is good experience for everybody and a good challenge for us."
Ville Husso had 32 saves for the Red Wings (28-24-9; 65 points), who picked up a point but are winless in their past four games. The Kraken improved to 34-21-6 (74 points) this season.
"Probably a pretty good point considering the emotions of today," head coach Derek Lalonde said. "Then to be down 3-1, we lacked a little urgency early on and gave them some easy offense. But I thought at 3-1, I liked our game. We had some pushback, zone time and created some offense.
"Tough read in that it was a slow start that got us in a hole, but I thought we played a fairly good game."
NEXT UP: Detroit will play back-to-back road games this weekend, beginning with a Saturday matinee against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. Puck drop is set for 12:30 p.m.

QUOTABLE

Lalonde on the human element of the sport and the Friday's trade deadline
"We lose key pieces. It was an emotional morning. I think the guys were taken by surprise, just the way it shook down. You can never predict the trade deadline."
Chiarot on the final stretch of the season
"It's not like we're dead in the water. We're still right in the mix. I think it's important, not just this year to continue to play and make a push, but building towards next year and years after. Playing games that matter is important, especially for young guys that haven't experienced the intensity that can bring."
Walman on Berggren and Zadina
"They definitely give us a spark when they are out there. When they play their game, they are hard to stop. Like Benny said, I think these types of games are good for young guys who we're trying to build with."
