Erne was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round (No. 33) of the 2013 NHL Draft after he scored 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists) in 68 games for Quebec of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. On April 1, 2014, Erne signed an entry-level contract with the Lightning.
Erne finished second on Quebec with 86 points (41 goals, 45 assists) in 60 games in 2014-15 and won the Guy Lafleur Trophy as QMJHL most valuable player.

He started the next season with Syracuse of the American Hockey League and scored 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists) in 42 games. He was recalled by the Lightning on Jan. 2, 2017 and made his debut the next night against the Winnipeg Jets. He scored his first NHL goal in a 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 3 and scored three goals in 26 games.
Erne scored 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 41 games for Syracuse to begin the 2017-18 season. He was recalled by the Lightning on Feb. 8 and scored one goal that night in a 5-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks. Erne finished the season with four points (three goals, one assist) in 23 games.
A restricted free agent, Erne was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on Aug. 14, 2019. He scored five points (two goals, three assists) in 56 games for Detroit before breaking his hand blocking a shot by Ottawa Senators defenseman Mike Reilly on Feb. 29, 2020.
