DET@CAR: Erne scores after Greiss’ save in shootout

DETROIT -- In a game that once again displayed the team's resilience, the Detroit Red Wings secured a hard fought, 5-4 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Saturday night.

Forward Adam Erne scored the deciding goal in the seventh round of the shootout and extended his career-high point streak to six games with his 10th goal of the season in the third period. Captain Dylan Larkin also scored in both regulation and the shootout, while Anthony Mantha and Valtteri Filppula found the back of the net in the first and second periods, respectively.
Martin Necas, Jordan Staal, Dougie Hamilton and Sebastian Aho all scored goals for the Hurricanes and Andrei Svechnikov added another in the shootout.

The Wings picked up their third win of the season over the Hurricanes and improved their record to 14-23-6 (34 points), while Carolina moved to 27-9-4 (58 points).
Against one of the top teams in the Central Division and across the NHL, Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill was pleased with how his team approached the game.
"I thought it was a really gritty effort," Blashill said. "I give our guys lots of credit. I thought they dug in. There was pushes back and forth. (The Hurricanes are) one of the best teams in the league. We have a number of good teams in our division, but they're one of the best teams in the league, and I thought our guys did a really good job."

The Hurricanes, wearing retro reverse uniforms honoring their days as the Hartford Whalers, started fast as Necas scored his 11th goal of the season just 1:38 into the first period to make it 1-0.
Larkin and Mantha combined to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals 3:55 apart later in the period thanks to a couple of deft deflections. Larkin scored after the puck bounced in off his leg, and Mantha tipped home a shot from Alex Biega that got past Carolina goalie and former Red Wings netminder Petr Mrazek.

The first period came to an end with the score tied, 2-2, after Jordan Staal beat goalie Thomas Greiss at the 14:44 mark.
The second period saw each team pick up a goal as Hamilton gave Carolina a 3-2 lead with a wrist shot from the circle near the midway point of the second. The Red Wings got another bounce to go their way, as Filppula's shot pinballed around, off the skate of Jordan Staal and past Mrazek to tie the game at 3-3.

In the early stages of the third period, it was a tight affair as both teams traded chances. Erne broke the tie with an incredible individual effort as he blocked a shot, beat multiple Hurricanes down the ice and backhanded the puck past Mrazek, top shelf, to give the Red Wings a 4-3 lead.
"It's been going well lately, but I'm just trying to stick to my game," Erne said about his recent play. "Just trying to take advantage of the opportunities I get. Luckily I was able to tonight."
Carolina thought it had tied the game less than a minute after Erne's goal, but Detroit challenged the call for goalie interference and won, preserving the 4-3 lead. Aho then tied the game, 4-4, with exactly four minutes remaining in regulation. The game was sent to overtime with the score knotted at 4-4.
After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime, the game was extended to a shootout, and Larkin scored to open things up for the Red Wings. Detroit had a chance to end the game in round three, but Andrei Svechnikov beat Greiss to extend the action.
With both teams trading saves in the ensuing three rounds, Erne this time used his forehand, again beating Mrazek top-shelf, to clinch the victory for the Red Wings.
"We've got a lot of character in this room," Erne said. "A great group of guys and we got, obviously, embarrassed last game, and I was really happy with the way we played tonight. Other than the first 10 minutes, I thought we played some solid hockey."
The Red Wings will look to secure the series sweep over Carolina on Monday night, with a 7 p.m. puck drop from PNC Arena (Bally Sports Detroit Plus, Red Wings Radio Network).
