GAME PREVIEW

The Penguins hit the road as they take on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. Pittsburgh has picked up points in 13 of its last 15 games against New York (10-2-3), and is 13-4-3 over its last 20 games versus the Islanders. The Penguins have earned points in seven of their last nine games on Long Island (5-2-2).

MORNING SKATE UPDATES

The Penguins held a full morning skate. Here's everything you need to know...
- Casey DeSmith was the first goalie off, and will get his second straight start between the pipes after a 33-save performance in Pittsburgh's 3-2 overtime win against Nashville on Sunday. Head coach Mike Sullivan said that decision was partly due to his play, and partly to give Tristan Jarry a bit of a rest.
"Casey played really well the other night," Sullivan said. "He's gotten better with every game that he's played here over the last couple of months. We're obviously trying to manage Tristan's workload, and this gives us an opportunity to do that. And so that's part of the reason why we did what we did."
- Winger Brock McGinn will return to the lineup after missing the last 15 games with an upper-body injury. He sustained the injury blocking a shot on March 11 vs. Vegas.
"Those are the things you got to do," he said. "And maybe sometimes that's the consequence, but I'm happy that everything is going smoothly. The trainers did a good job just with my rehab and making sure everything went well."
- Meanwhile, Evgeni Malkin will come out of the lineup as he serves the first of his
four-game suspension
given by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for cross-checking Predators defenseman Mark Borowiecki. Sullivan said that while the Penguins felt the suspension was "a little bit heavy," they certainly respect the league's decision.
"I believe we have a deep enough lineup that we can certainly put line combinations together that can help us have success," Sullivan said. "It's going to provide opportunities for other guys to step up and play more significant roles."
Here is the workflow that the Penguins used...
Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Carter-Rakell
Rodrigues-Blueger-McGinn
Heinen-Boyle-Kapanen
Matheson-Letang
Dumoulin-Marino
Friedman-Ruhwedel
(Pettersson-Malkin)

QUICK HITS

Bryan Rust has nine goals (12 points total) in his last 11 games against the New York Islanders.
Jeff Carter has 48 points (22G-26A) in 52 career games versus the Islanders, which is his highest point total against any one team (Florida - 37 PTS). His 22 goals are tied for his most versus any one team (Edmonton).
Kris Letang leads all active defensemen in goals (12), assists (28) and points (40) against the Islanders.
Danton Heinen has points (2G-3A) in five of eight career games versus the Islanders.
Jake Guentzel's 17 road-even strength goals are tied for third in the league.

PUSH FOR THE PLAYOFFS

Under the guidance of head coach Mike Sullivan, Pittsburgh is playing some of the best and most consistent hockey in the league and looks poised to clinch a playoff berth for a 16th consecutive year. The Penguins current stretch of 15-straight playoff appearances is the longest active postseason streak among teams in the major North American professional sports leagues, and is the eighth-longest run of any NHL club since the 1967 NHL Expansion, and is one shy of tying the Calgary Flames (1976-91) for the seventh-longest such run. Pittsburgh's magic number to clinch a playoff berth is FOUR, and the Penguins can clinch a playoff berth by beating the Islanders tonight in regulation. The team's magic number goes down if the Penguins accumulate points of any kind or if the Islanders fail to accumulate their maximum point total each game they play the rest of the season.
