By the Numbers will highlight the Red Wings' on-ice accomplishments in the 2019-20 season. Each week during the offseason, By the Numbers will profile a different player on the team, focusing on his statistical highs. This week we focus on forward Sam Gagner.

Although Sam Gagner was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, sixth overall, in 2007, he was no stranger to the Detroit Red Wings.

Gagner, the son of former NHL forward Dave Gagner, was born in London, Ontario and was a witness as the Wings emerged from their Dead Things years to their Stanley Cup champion seasons.

He still has family in nearby Ontario and they were all pleased when the Wings traded Andreas Athanasiou and Ryan Kuffner to the Oilers for Gagner, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft and a second-round pick in the 2021 draft on Feb. 24, trade deadline day.

Although Gagner was in Detroit a short time, he quickly assimilated into the Detroit dressing room and made himself part of the community.

Shortly after the NHL paused March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gagner made a donation to Forgotten Harvest and invited fans who were able to do so to join him.

Gagner returned to Edmonton to be with his wife and three children and he also contributed to relief efforts there.

Having just completed a three-year, $9.45 million contract that he originally signed with the Vancouver Canucks in 2017, Gagner will be an unrestricted free agent.
