RECAP: Red Wings win 'a big one' in shootout over Oilers, 5-4

EDMONTON -- Pius Suter admitted he didn't initially hear his name being called.

According to Suter, he was sitting near the end of the bench when several Detroit Red Wings players alerted the 26-year-old forward to head to center ice for a shootout attempt against Edmonton Oilers goalie Jack Campbell.
"Everybody was turning around, so then I knew, but I already had a move in my mind because I saw something I liked earlier," said Suter, who went on to score the deciding goal in Detroit's 5-4 shootout victory over Edmonton on Wednesday night at Rogers Place. "It worked out well. This was a huge team win."
Finding the back of the net for the fourth straight game, Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 4:17 of the first period before Moritz Seider doubled Detroit's lead, 2-0, roughly 13 minutes later. Robby Fabbri and Olli Maatta both scored in the middle frame for Detroit, which entered the second intermission with a 4-2 advantage. Early in the third, the Oilers pulled even, 4-4, with a pair of quick goals. The Red Wings and Oilers each registered two shots on goal in a scoreless overtime.
David Perron also netted a shootout tally for Detroit (25-20-8; 58 points), which won its fourth straight game to match a season-high the club set from Nov. 17-25. Red Wings netminder Ville Husso made 41 saves against Edmonton (30-19-6; 66 points), collecting his 21st win of the season.
"Just winning on the road is difficult period," Detroit head coach Derek Lalonde said. "Let alone against a team like that with the type of difference they have."
NEXT UP:Detroit will play the second half of a midweek back-to-back on Thursday night, squaring off against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop is set for 9 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MT.

Detroit 1, Edmonton 0 (4:17, 1st period)
David Perron one-timed Seider's cross-ice pass into the right faceoff circle for Robby Fabbri, who slid the puck to Larkin waiting on the goal line. Larkin then snapped a wrist shot past Campbell for a power-play goal, recording his league-leading 19th game-opening tally dating back to last season.

Detroit 2, Edmonton 0 (17:19, 1st period)
Seider extended his point streak to five straight games with his fourth goal of the season off a faceoff win by Andrew Copp. It marks the 21-year-old defenseman's third career NHL point streak of at least five contests. Seider is also the first defenseman in Red Wings history with three runs of that length before age 22.

Edmonton 1, Detroit 2 (1:26, 2nd period)
The Oilers got on the board less than two minutes into the middle frame when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins finished Connor McDavid's drop pass from the right faceoff circle.
Detroit 3, Edmonton 1 (9:06, 2nd period)
Filip Hronek's pass from along the wall got to Perron, who quickly worked the puck across to Fabbri just above the right faceoff cirlce. After collecting the puck, Fabbri fired a wrister into the back of the net for a man-advantage tally.

Edmonton 2, Detroit 3 (11:32, 2nd period)
McDavid set up Nugent-Hopkins in front of Detroit's net for his second goal of the period.
Detroit 4, Edmonton 2 (16:12, 2nd period)
Matta, assisted by Larkin, found twine on a shot from the point for his fifth goal of the season.

Edmonton 3, Detroit 4 (3:26, 3rd period)
Tyson Barrie sent a pass to Leon Draisaitl, who buried a one-timer past Husso on the power play to bring Edmonton within one.
Edmonton 4, Detroit 4 (5:27, 3rd period)
The Oilers erased their two-goal deficit when Derek Ryan got his stick on Klim Kostin's shot for a tip-in goal.
Shootout
Perron scored in the second round before Suter sealed the win for Detroit in the fifth round. McDavid scored the lone shootout goal for Edmonton. Suter improved to a perfect 2-for-2 in shootout attempts in his NHL career.
