TORONTO -- The Detroit Red Wings took a first-period lead for the second game in as many days, but eventually fell, 4-1, to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena.

Jake Walman's breakaway goal at 11:57 of the first put Detroit ahead, 1-0. The Red Wings limited the Maple Leafs to just two shots in the opening frame, tying a season-low for shots allowed in a single period.
"It was a great first period," head coach Derek Lalonde said. "We owned the middle of the ice, managed the puck well and took away time and space. "Unfortunately, a very similar theme. Five-on-five play, good. But we lost the special-teams battle again tonight and our penalty kill was better."
Lalonde on what the Red Wings must do following Saturday's game
"Just playing well Tuesday. This was a tough back-to-back with the travel. A day off tomorrow. We'll get a good practice in on Monday and be ready to go on Tuesday."
Walman on the Red Wings' desire to improve special-teams play
"We're really trying. We're all fired up to go out there and kill it. Sometimes, it doesn't happen that way. But I think we're moving in the right direction."
