Pens Elite Defenseman Carter Schade Goes No. 1 Overall in USHL Draft

Sixteen-year-old defenseman Carter Schade from Mars, Pa. and the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth hockey program was the first overall pick in the USHL draft Monday night - the first local player to be accorded that honor by the country's top junior hockey league.

Schade went No. 1 to the Lincoln Stars.

Four other players from the Penguins Elite program also were drafted Monday, including forward Ty Voit of Wexford, who was a first-round pick, ninth overall, by the Cedar Rapids Roughriders.

Also selected were:

  • Andrew Pichora, goaltender, from Bethel Park, in the 4th round (55th overall) by Cedar Rapids
  • Shawn O'Donnell, forward, from Crescent Township, 4th round (80th overall) by Omaha
  • Jackson Morehouse, forward, from Sewickley, 10th round (147th overall) by Omaha

This first phase of the draft was for players with 2003 birth years.

Previously, a number of DICK'S Sporting Goods Penguins Elite players had committed to other teams and leagues - forward Colby Saganiuk to the U.S. National Development Team program; goaltender Aidan Campbell to the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League; defenseman Teddy Sawyer to the Ottawa 67's of the OHL; forward Alex Servagno to Chippewa of the NAHL; and defenseman Caden Lewandowski to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the NAHL.

Pens Elite's Sawyer Commits to Ottawa 67's

Defenseman Teddy Sawyer of DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite has committed to the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League.

The 6-foot, 165-pound defenseman was selected by Ottawa in the third round of the recent OHL draft.

Sawyer split time with the Penguins Elite 15U and 16 U teams this season, producing 14 goals and 33 assists for 47 points.

"Teddy is a defender who is an excellent skater and plays an aggressive style," said 67's general manager James Boyd. "We are pleased that the Sawyers chose the 67's for the next phase of Teddy's development and we welcome them to the organization."

Sawyer is the second Penguins Elite player to commit to an OHL team in the past week, joining goaltender Aidan Campbell (Erie Otters).

Team Pittsburgh Wins America's Showcase - Again

"Team Pittsburgh," featuring twenty players from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League, beat Team Texas, 9-2, to win its second straight America's Showcase tournament last week in St. Louis.

Team Pittsburgh went 6-0 in the tournament and outscored its opponents, 54-5.

Members of the team were Richie Karapandi (North Allegheny), Danny Stauffer (Pine Richland), Jordan Adams (Cathedral Prep), JC Bele (Bethel Park), Ryan Brown (Connellsville), Tanner Daniels (General McLane), Nicholas Frantz (Meadville), Wyatt George (Mt. Lebanon), Jared Gerger (Hempfield), Jake Kruszewski (Cathedral Prep), Hunter Partsch (Westmont Hilltop), Corbin Ragno (Westmont Hilltop), Oldrich Virag (Franklin Regional), Vincent Vituccio (Bethel Park), Tyler Duderstadt (North Allegheny), Dustin Geregach (Montour), Andrew Jacobs (Conneaut), Jeremy Jenkins (Beaver Area), Jordan Rosenbaum (Pine Richland), and Ross Zofcin (Baldwin).

The head coach was Paul Bonetti (Chartiers Valley) and assistants were Justin Glock (Baldwin) and Clay Shell (Montour). Gina Colligan was general manager.
