Notebook: Red Wings' Winged Wheel documentary series wins Emmy award

The Detroit Red Wings took home hardware on Saturday at the 44th annual Emmy Awards ceremony, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - Michigan Chapter, at MotorCity Casino Hotel's Sound Board.

The Red Wings received an Emmy for Sports Story - Long Form Content for The Winged Wheel, presented by Bud Light Seltzer. Active Ilitch Sports + Entertainment employees recognized for the award include producers Mike Fitzsimmons and Mark Milligan, co-producer/writer Art Regner, co-producer Brian Woodworth and producer/editor Brian Ducoffe.
The Winged Wheel is a multi-episode documentary series throughout the regular season, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at life inside the Red Wings organization.

Local representation at 2022 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship

Three players who suited up for the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club 19U Girls program this season shined on the international stage.
Forwards Cassandra Hall, Kirsten Simms and Elyssa Biederman all represented the United States as part of the 2022 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship, which was held in Madison, Wis., from June 6-13.
Hall finished the tournament with four points on two goals and two assists in five games, including a plus-4 rating.
Simms totaled five helpers and a plus-4 rating while Biederman had one goal and a plus-2 rating. Both appeared in five contests
The U.S. finished with a 3-0-0 preliminary-round record (nine points), good for first in Group A. On Sunday, the Americans rallied to defeat Sweden, 3-2, to advance to Monday's gold-medal game against Canada. In the championship game, Canada defeated the U.S., 3-2.

Hall, Simms and Biederman have experience playing in big moments.
They helped guide Little Caesars 19U Girls to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers on April 4, securing the program's first-ever Chipotle-USA Hockey Tier I Girls 19U National Championship.

Red Wings celebrate 20th anniversary of the 2002 Stanley Cup

Twenty years ago Monday - June 13, 2002 - the Red Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-1, in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, securing the franchise's 10th championship.

Detroit went 51-17-4 overall (116 points) in 2006-07, claiming the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL team with the best overall record.

Soderblom signs entry-level contract with Detroit

The Red Wings signed forward Elmer Soderblom to a three-year entry-level contract last Thursday
.
Soderblom enjoyed a breakout season in 2021-22 with Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, recording 21 goals and 33 points in 52 games. The 20-year-old also had six points (3-3-6) and a plus-6 rating in nine postseason games to help Frolunda reach the SHL Playoffs semifinals.
When asked about Soderblom, Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman described his development as a "pleasant surprise."
"I remember when we had him over here two years ago in training camp and we did some fitness tests," Yzerman said in his end-of-season media session. "It was pretty exciting to see where he was at. It wasn't like 'When this guy gets stronger or when this guy gets powerful.' He's already powerful and he's already explosive. Can you imagine, as he continues to work at it, where the potential is here?"

Detroit's 159th pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Soderblom has developed in Frolunda's system since 2014-15. He made his SHL debut during the 2019-20 season.

Seider named Red Wings Rookie of the Year by Detroit Sports Media

Last Thursday, defenseman Moritz Seider was named the 2021-22 Red Wings Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Media Association.
The rookie blueliner played in all 82 games with Detroit this season, recording seven goals and 43 assists. He paced all Red Wings with 43 assists, 21 power-play points and 23:02 average time on ice.
Seider's impressive campaign was officially recognized on May 11, when he
was named one of three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy
, awarded annually to the NHL's top rookie as voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
The 21-year-old will be honored by the Detroit Sports Media Association prior to a Red Wings home game during the 2022-23 season. The DSMA Red Wings Rookie of the Year Award dates back to the 1948-49 NHL season. Previous recipients of the award include current Red Wings Dylan Larkin and Filip Hronek along with Calder Trophy winners Roger Crozier, Glenn Hall and Terry Sawchuk.
