Justin Thomas is one of the best golfers in the world, looking to defend his PGA Championship title this weekend at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

The native of Louisville, Kentucky also happens to be a big hockey fan, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are his team. So, when he spotted Sidney Crosby at a restaurant in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, Thomas was pumped.

He was dining with fellow golfers Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Smylie Kaufman, and their wives, enjoying the last evening of

in mid-April. And after chatting with the captain and a few of his Penguins teammates, who were on a postseason golf trip, Thomas returned to his table and said to his buddies, "boys, it looks like we've got a night ahead of us."

They sure did, with Thomas recounting the events to follow on the debut episode of Kaufman's podcast, The Smylie Show (listen here - the Sid stuff starts around the 57-minute mark.

While hockey players are known for being jokesters who love a good prank, the golf guys gave them a run for their money that night. It all started when Crosby sent over a nice bottle of wine, which inspired a response straight out of the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

"You could just see our minds churning with our immatureness of how we were going to respond," Thomas said with a laugh. "(The waiter's) kind of standing there, like, do you want to send anything back? And I don't know why, it just came into my mind - I was like, what salads do you guys have? What do you think about splitting a Caesar salad into eight portions and giving it to them?"

The waiter was all in, telling Thomas he could make a whole presentation out of it. "I'm like, perfect. That's great. So, we're all geeked up," Thomas said. They watched as a group of servers approached the Penguins players - including Jake Guentzel - and said, "on behalf of Justin and everybody and the guys, they wanted to send you guys something!" … and it was just a piece of lettuce and a crouton on each plate.

Not to be outdone, Crosby and company had the waiter take over what looked like a tray of tequila shots, complete with salt around the rims and limes.

"You know when you see something and it just looks warm? We're like, this is a warm tequila shot!" Thomas said. "We just feel the glass, and everybody is just like, petrified to smell this thing, let alone try it. So, all of us are getting a little closer to it and someone at the table just goes, it's water!"

The golfers got a kick out of that, and then sent over a round of their own - glasses of 2% milk - to close out the hilarious back-and-forth. After that, Thomas tried picking up the tab for the Penguins as repayment for the friendly gesture that started it all, but they got in the final word.

"I think they sent it back and said no, we know you missed the cut at the Masters, so you probably shouldn't pay for this, or something like that," said Thomas, who finished tied for eighth the year before. "Those hockey guys are very witty. So, it was good fun, for sure."

The fun didn't stop there, as they all returned to the house rented by the Penguins, which was pretty much across the street from where the golfers were staying. The group eventually decided to play some flip cup.

"We're setting it up, and picking teams. It's like captains, and we're going back and forth, and I'm all pumped up. I'm on Sidney Crosby's flip cup team, this is going to be freakin' awesome," Thomas said. But the star of the show was Kaufman, who orchestrated a head-to-head matchup against the captain, and defeated him. "People were talking, like, that's where I'll peak in my life," Smylie joked.

The boys appreciate the support Thomas has given them over the years, and they'll certainly be doing the same for him this week, as he goes for his third major win. For anyone who wants to know more about Thomas, the first episode of Netflix's Full Swing is centered around the golfer and his journey to last year's victory.
