The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year contract, it was announced today by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.

van Riemsdyk is signed through the 2027-28 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $4 million.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman tallied 14 points (3G-11A) in 68 games played with Washington in 2025-26. van Riemsdyk ranked fourth among Capitals defensemen in shorthanded time-on-ice per game (1:43) and fifth in plus-minus (+6). In addition, he ranked fifth among all Washington skaters in blocked shots (97).

van Riemsdyk has collected 161 points (28G-133A) in 751 career games with Chicago, Carolina and Washington, winning a Stanley Cup Championship with the Blackhawks in 2015. His 751 career games played ranks fifth among active undrafted NHL defensemen, and van Riemsdyk achieved career highs in goals (7) and points (23) in 2022-23 and assists (20) in 2024-25.

The native of Middletown, New Jersey represented his country on the international stage at the 2017 World Championship, and before turning professional, van Riemsdyk played three seasons of collegiate hockey with the University of New Hampshire (2011-14), collecting 75 points (16G-59A) in 102 games played.
