Notables
* After having four days off for the holiday break, the Pens host the Detroit Red Wings for the 1st time this season. The Red Wings have won the season series 2-1 each of the last two years. However, the Pens have won 5 of the last 7 games played against Detroit at PPG Paints Arena, and right now, they're 7-2-1 in their past 10 home games.
* The Pens will be looking to continue the momentum they built heading into the holiday break, as they played 6 games in 9 days from Dec. 14-22 and went 5-1 in those contests.
* Overall, the Pens are 8-2-1 in their last 11 games and 11-4-3 in their last 18, going from last place in the Eastern Conference to third place in the Metro Division.
* Matt Murray will start in net for the Pens. He is coming off a 39-save shutout in Pittsburgh's 3-0 victory over the Hurricanes in Carolina on Dec. 21. Overall, he is 3-0 with a 1.30 goals-against average and .964 save percentage since returning from a lower-body injury that caused him to miss a month of action.
* Bryan Rust has been the Pens' hottest player this month with 8 goals and 13 points in 12 games during December. He is currently riding a career-long 5-game point streak (5G-3A-8PTS).
* The Red Wings have just one win in their last 7 tries, going 1-4-2 over that stretch. They fell in overtime to Toronto, 5-4, in overtime in their final game before the holiday break on Dec. 23.
* Dylan Larkin scored in that contest to extend his point streak to 11 games. The center has 5 goals and 14 points over that stretch and leads the team with 15 goals and 36 points in 38 games.
Injuries
PIT - Jamie Oleksiak (concussion), Justin Schultz (lower leg fracture).
DET - Andreas Athanasiou (upper body), Danny DeKeyser (upper body), Mike Green (lower body), Darren Helm (upper body), Anthony Mantha (hand).
