The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Filip Hallander, it was announced today by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.
Stastney is signed through the 2026-27 season, and his contract carries an average annual value of $1.525 million.
Stastney, 26, spent the 2025-26 campaign split between the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, establishing career highs in games played (66), goals (2), assists (8), points (10) and blocked shots (63). Stastney also saw time on Nashville’s fifth-ranked penalty-killing unit, averaging 1:27 of shorthanded time-on-ice per game.
The 5-foot-11, 196-pound blueliner joins the Penguins with four seasons of professional experience from 2022-26 split between the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators. In 117 career regular-season games, Stastney has notched four goals, 15 assists and 19 points. He’s also suited up for three career Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Predators, where he was plus-1.
The native of Woodridge, Illinois has represented the United States on the international stage at the 2020 World Junior Championship and the 2018 World Under-18 Championship, bringing home a silver medal in 2018. He was also a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2016-18.
Prior to being drafted by Nashville in the fifth round (131st overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft, Stastney played four seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame from 2018-22, serving as an alternate captain his final season.
