Conor Timmons was the first selection of the second round (32nd overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, which was held June 23-24, at United Center in Chicago.
Timmons, a native of Thorold, Ontario, had seven goals and 54 assists (61 points) last season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League and was rated as 18th-best North American skater by NHL Central Scouting going into the draft. In the OHL Playoffs, he recorded eight points (one goal and seven assists) in 11 contests.
The defenseman recently talked with ColoradoAvalanche.com about being chosen by the team and getting ready for the upcoming season.
What was your draft day experience like?
"It was a really great experience. I didn't have to wait too long on Saturday, so being taken with the first pick on the second day was pretty special."
What is your most vital asset as a defenseman?
"My hockey IQ. I think the game really well, and it has benefited me in the past."
How old were you when you first started skating?
"I was about 2-3 years old when I got on the ice. My dad was a coach so it was really cool to always be around the rink, and it really helped me in my career."
What is your favorite hockey memory?
"Probably our first round of the playoffs in my first year in the OHL. We upset a heavily-favorited Sarnia team."
Going into the draft, did you have any idea of who was going to pick you?
"I had a couple of inclinations, but I didn't really talk to Colorado at the combine, but I am really happy to be here."
Who were some of your idols growing up?
"Guys like Nicklas Lidstrom. His nickname is "The Perfect Human" and just watching him play and all the stuff he was able to do is pretty amazing."
What influenced you to play hockey?
"Just always being around the rink, it's all I have ever wanted to do. Whenever I'm not playing hockey, it is still on my mind."
What was the most interesting thing about the scouting combine?
"Meeting the teams. It was pretty intimating to see all the people that you grew up hearing about, and the teams you grew up watching. So, finally getting to meet all those guys and realizing your that next step from the NHL is pretty cool."

What are you most excited about when it comes to being in Colorado?
"Just getting to see the city, and getting an idea of what the city is like. The scenery with the mountains is really cool."

"Heights. Good one to have in Colorado, right?"
If you had a time machine would you go back in time or visit the future? Why?
"Probably the future. I would want to see when I die."
What is your pregame routine?
"Play two-touch soccer with the guys and then tape up my stick. Just the basic stuff."
