Carolina leads 1-0.

NEWS & NOTES

Setting The Tone Early Again:The most imperative portion of
Wednesday's Game 1 victory
was Carolina's dominant start. It was a combination of both them being ready to go with fresh legs, and New Jersey being not far enough removed from their emotional Game 7 victory over New York on Monday. Entering the evening a big question mark was how they were going to beat rookie goaltender Akira Schmid, but a shot through traffic and an odd-man rush the other way proved to be two early ways to first-period success.
Is The Blue Line Back?:Carolina's defense was held to just one goal in their first-round series win over the New York Islanders after setting a franchise record with 59 goals during the regular season. Their offensive spark was evident on Wednesday though, receiving goals from both Brett Pesce and Brady Skjei en route to victory.

Winning The Special Teams Battle:Special teams weren't an overwhelming storyline in Wednesday's affair, as both teams went perfect on the penalty kill in their five combined attempts. Two of those power play bids were shortened as well, unsurprisingly meaning that all five of the six goals scored on the evening came during five-on-five play.
Watch The Pushback:New Jersey's showing on Wednesday was far from what made them the successful 112-point regular-season team. The feeling that there were some tired legs on their group after their series-clinching victory on Monday and the consensus is that they'll have a better performance this evening.
In Net:Frederik Andersen was good when he needed to be Wednesday, stopping 17 out of 18 tests from the Devils. He only faced one shot in the first period and the only shot that got by him all night was a breakaway after a defensive breakdown at neutral ice. While all signs would point to him going again on Friday, Rod Brind'Amour could rotate his goaltenders at any time, meaning that Antti Raanta is most certainly an option.
Go Fish:Sebastian Aho enters tonight with points in four consecutive games, dating back to Game 4 of the Islanders series.
Shooting For Three:Carolina went 46-5-5 when scoring three goals or more during the regular season, including two wins against the Devils. They are 3-0 in the postseason when reaching the benchmark.
