Every season, the Carolina Hurricanes host a variety of charity drives to assist organizations in the local community with much-needed items. Annual drives include our School Supply Drive, Food Drive, Toy Drive, Book Drive and Military Drive.
Hockey Fights Cancer is a National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association initiative dedicated to one of hockey's most important fights. The Carolina Hurricanes are proud to participate and assist in raising funds for local children's hospitals, cancer research institutions and cancer awareness and support groups.
Each year, the Hurricanes host an awareness night highlighting local cancer organizations, patients, survivors and their family members. Participation spans the entire organization, including players, coaches, broadcasters and executive management, and the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation hosts a special auction. The Hurricanes have donated over $60,000 to cancer organizations through the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.
Hockey is for Everyone™ is a league-wide initiative to drive positive social change and foster more inclusive communities. All hockey programs - from professionals to youth organizations - should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
The Carolina Hurricanes have had a long-standing commitment to the NHL's Hockey is for Everyone initiative for several years.
Capital City Crew
Capital City Crew provides opportunities for inner-city youth ages 8-14 to play ice hockey through partnerships with the Wake County Boys & Girls Clubs, Raleigh Youth Hockey Association (RYHA) and the Hurricanes. The program teaches life skills and positive character traits such as leadership, gamesmanship, respect, cooperation, industriousness, honesty and integrity through the sport of ice hockey.
Triangle Special Hockey Association
The Triangle Special Hockey Association aims to educate, motivate and encourage individuals who have developmental and/or physical disabilities to participate in the sport of ice hockey in an environment that is adapted to their level of ability at low or no cost to the athletes and their families. The Carolina Hurricanes Foundation has donated over $90,000 to the Triangle Special Hockey Association through its Future Canes grant program.
The Carolina Sled Hockey Team is a local sled hockey team comprised of individuals with mobility limitations. In 2016, the team was crowned the C Division National Champions of the USA Hockey National Disabled Festival. The Hurricanes support the Carolina Sled Hockey Team through a combination of in-kind and monetary donations as well as providing Hurricanes branding for the team.
You Can Play
The National Hockey League and NHLPA partnered with You Can Play, who works to ensure safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ athletes, coaches and fans. You Can Play believes sports teams should focus on an athlete's skills, work ethic and competitive spirit, not their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
The Hurricanes host a You Can Play Night that promotes inclusivity and acceptance through highlighting the LGBTQ community and featuring local LGBTQ organizations, individuals, activists and allies.
