"We're thrilled to continue the Power Play program with the Wake Country Public School System, Chatham County Schools and Durham Public Schools," Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell said. "We're excited to continue promoting health and fitness in our community by bringing back the Power Play program for a third season."
"We know that students who are physically fit tend to perform better in the classroom. Our wonderful partners, the Carolina Hurricanes, know this, too," said Wake County Public School System Superintendent Cathy Moore. "That is why we are excited to launch the third year of Power Play in our middle schools. This great program gives our young people tools and information to incorporate exercise into their lives while also making it fun."
"Power Play underscored the emphasis we place on healthy lifestyles, so we're looking forward to continuing the partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes," said Chatham County Schools Superintendent Dr. Derrick D. Jordan.
"The Durham community has long made our students' health and fitness a top priority," said Durham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Pascal Mubenga. "The Hurricanes are providing a fun, challenging incentive that will help our students put down their devices and get on their feet."
"Youth health and sedentary lifestyles are growing concerns in our state, and the Carolina Hurricanes' Power Play program is a fantastic way to educate and reward Triangle-area students for making healthy lifestyle choices," said Chad Henry, Corporate Vice President for Novo Nordisk. "We're proud to support the Power Play program for the third year, and we're confident the winning combination of fun, online challenges and hockey star Jaccob Slavin will once again motivate thousands of local middle school students to exercise 60 minutes per day."
The Power Play program, presented by Novo Nordisk, is a partnership between the Carolina Hurricanes and three local public-school systems (Wake County, Durham County, and Chatham County). The Power Play program educates middle school students on the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle through physical activity. Students are challenged to exercise 60 minutes a day in three key areas of cardio, strength, and free play from Oct. 14 through Nov. 22. Students that reach the 20-hour exercise goal will be rewarded with two free tickets to a Hurricanes home game. Last year, students had almost 3 million minutes of exercise logged.
