PHILADELPHIA - Led by two-point performances from Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and William Carrier, the Carolina Hurricanes thumped the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday.

Following a scoreless opening stanza that left both clubs lamenting some missed opportunities, Svechnikov broke the ice just past the midway point of the contest with a sizzling snipe off the rush. That marker inspired another in short order, with Shayne Gostisbehere turning in a perfect pass from Aho to double the Canes' lead at 13:45.

A desperate Flyers club seeking its first win halved the lead fewer than two minutes later, but Aho needed just 88 seconds to dash that rally and find the scoresheet for a second time. Some slick puckhandling from Carrier teed up the Finn in the right circle, who snuck a one-timer through the legs of Joseph Woll before the second break.

Carolina clung to its two-goal advantage through much of the final frame, then tacked on an added insurance marker through the red-hot Mark Jankowski to close things out.

Pyotr Kochetkov stayed perfect between the pipes with 18 saves on 19 shots, moving to 3-0-0 on the year.

Stats & Standouts

  • Another game, another multi-point outing for Sebastian Aho, who now has three games with two or more trips to the scoresheet this season. Among all NHLers, only Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Jack Eichel (4 each) have more.
  • Aho tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the campaign, matching the most in the NHL. The Finn now has points in six straight games (6G, 5A) – tied for the longest active point streak in the league.
  • Andrei Svechnikov logged a goal and an assist, marking his third multi-point effort in his last five games. His eight points on the year trail only Sebastian Aho (11) among Hurricanes skaters.
  • William Carrier recorded his second multi-point game (2A) as a Hurricane, and now ranks T-2nd on the team in assists (5) with Sebastian Aho and Sean Walker. Jackson Blake (6) has the most.
  • Mark Jankowski struck for a career-best fourth consecutive contest. The 32-year-old is off to the best start of his career, boasting more goals (4) through the first seven games of this season than he has ever had points during that span of any other campaign.
  • Shayne Gostisbehere lived up to his "Ghost" nickname once more, haunting his former club with the game-winning goal after netting the overtime dagger in the clubs' last meeting eight days ago.
  • Jordan Martinook picked up an assist – his third point in the last two games – to hit 200 points as a Hurricane (82G, 118A).
  • Carolina's penalty killers went 3-for-3 on the night, turning in their league-high-tying fifth perfect performance of the season.

They Said It...

Rod Brind'Amour after his team's gutsy effort to win a second game in as many nights...

“We’ve had a lot of hockey here in a short amount of time, and we have a couple of guys out that are big parts. Other guys are just stepping up. 20 guys tonight just did enough. We had a couple of big plays, a couple of good individual efforts that you always need, and we got the win.”

Shayne Gostisbehere on why the group has had success lately...

“It’s not complicating it. We got a lot of pucks to the net. Everyone knows that. We shoot in quantities, and it breaks down defenses in the sense that it gets scrambly after there’s a rebound and whatnot. We have some skill too to make some really good plays. That was evident tonight.”

William Carrier following the team’s fifth consecutive win…

“We just wanted to find our game. It took a little bit of time, a couple of games, but I think we finally got it. We roll four lines, and everyone plays hard. It’s a long season, so there are a lot of games coming up, and we need four lines to play.”

Rod Brind'Amour closing with some praise for his backstop, Pyotr Kochetkov...

“He was super tonight, I thought. I thought that was the difference, really. He made some big saves when we needed it. The Flyers had a few chances there and all of a sudden it could have gone a different direction. Goaltending is huge, and he’s been great.”
