7.8.22 Day Two

MONTREAL -The Carolina Hurricanes added seven prospects to their organization Friday, as Rounds 2-6 of the NHL Draft took place at Centre Bell.

Before the team made their first selection of the event, Don Waddell and crew finalized a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers amid the second round. The team sent pending restricted free agent Tony DeAngelo and #220 overall
in exchange for three mid-round picks over the next three years
.
Carolina's General Manager said that the team had talked to DeAngelo and his representation about an extension, but when it was clear that it wasn't going to get done, the Canes did their best to maximize the return value. When asked if it was a difference in term or money, Waddell said, "probably the money."
When Carolina was finally on the clock themselves, here are the seven choices they made:
Round 2, Pick #60 Overall: Gleb Trikozov - Forward
Height: 6'1" | Weight: 185 | Native Country: Russia
2021-22 Season: 23 Goals, 22 Assists, 45 Points in 34 Games with Omskie Yasterby (Juniors)
2021-22 Season: 1 Goal, 1 Assist, 2 Points in 11 Games with Omskie Krylia (Tier II Pro)
Trikozov was ranked as high as #8 overall by some scouting outlets, but the Hurricanes were able to claim him in the final moments of the second round.
Canes Assistant GM Darren Yorke:"He's an incredibly high-end offensive player. He's really smart in transitioning the puck, carrying it from the neutral zone into the offensive zone."
Round 3, Pick #71 Overall: Alexander Perevalov - Forward
Height: 6'0" | Weight: 191 | Native Country: Russia
2021-22 Season: 25 Goals, 25 Assists, 50 Points in 42 Games with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv (Juniors)
2021-22 Season: 0 Goals, 0 Assists, 0 Points in 5 Games with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv (KHL)
Going with back-to-back Russian players to start the day, both Trikozov and Perevalov averaged over a point per game in the top junior league back home last year.
Perevalov even played five games with the KHL club, showing that the right-handed winger has some strong upside at his young age.
Round 4, Pick #101 Overall: Simon Forsmark - Defense
Height: 6'2" | Weight: 191 | Native Country: Sweden
2021-22 Season: 0 Goals, 3 Assists, 3 Points in 41 Games with Orebro (SHL - Top Tier Sweden)
2021-22 Season: 5 Goals, 22 Assists, 27 Points in 23 Games with Orebro (Juniors)
Forsmark, the lone Canes draft pick who was at the draft in Montreal, played most of his draft year playing against grown men in Sweden. To be a top tier club's top six defenseman at that age is incredibly impressive.
Yorke:"He's a big, left-handed defender that is able to generate offense as well as being able to play strong defense. We felt like he could fit into how we want to play."

7.8.22 Swede

Round 4, Pick #124 Overall: Cruz Lucius - Forward
Height: 6'1" | Weight: 184 | Native Country: USA
2021-22 Season: 5 Goals, 2 Assists, 7 Points in 10 Games with USNTDP Juniors (USHL)
2021-22 Season: 9 Goals, 9 Assists, 18 Points in 23 Games with U.S. National U18 Team (U.S. Development Program)
Committed to the University of Wisconsin from the fall, Lucius missed time this past season due to a broken wrist. It took a little longer for his season to get going, but the team still sees plenty of upside with him.
Yorke:"Another high-end offensive player with a great shot. He's great around the net and he can make you miss with his hands. We're excited that we were able to select him there."
Round 5, Pick #156 Overall: Vladimir Grudinin - Defense
Height: 5'10" | Weight: 158 | Native Country: Russia
2021-22 Season: 0 Goals, 1 Assist, 1 Points in 6 Games (KHL)
2021-22 Season: 1 Goal, 2 Assists, 3 Points in 12 Games (Tier II Pro)
2021-22 Season: 2 Goals, 11 Assists, 13 Points in 18 Games (Juniors)
Yorke:"He's someone that played in Russia, played against men, played on the national team. So someone may look at his size and ask if he can defend against men? The way he skates, the way he holds tight gaps, the way we watched him do it at the national level and be able to handle the strength of the older, biggest, stronger players is great. Then at World Juniors he showed the ability to really open things up at the offensive zone blue line. He created separation and defended well and that was exciting for us."
Round 6, Pick #171 Overall: Jakub Vondras - Goalie
Height: 6'3" | Weight: 180 | Native Country: Czechia
2021-22 Season: .925 Save Percentage in 18 Games with Pisek (Junior II)
2021-22 Season: .914 Save Percentage in 11 Games with Plzen (Junior I)
2021-22 Season: 2 Games Played with Klatovy (Tier III Pro)
Yorke:"He's an incredibly smart goalie. Lots of shoulder checks. He's able to recognize when side-to-side plays happen. He's athletic and has the power to get across. He's somebody that we're really excited to add to our organization."
Round 7, Pick #205 Overall: Alexander Pelevin - Defense
Height: 6'1" | Weight: 183 | Native Country: Russia
2021-22 Season: 3 Goals, 5 Assists, 8 Points in 25 Games (Juniors)
2021-22 Season: 0 Goals, 0 Assists, 0 Points in 2 Games (Tier II Pro)
2021-22 Season: 0 Goals, 0 Assists, 0 Points in 1 Game (KHL)
Yorke:"A similar player to Grudinin in the fact that he's able to hold tight gaps. He's able to get up in the play and join the rush. Once he's able to transition to North America, some of that offensive game will be able to be easier for him because of how well he skates and holds tight gaps. The competitive aspect to his game is really strong as well."
