In March, the NHL announced that the Penguins will play host to the Flyers at Heinz Field on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. ET for the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™. The primetime match-up will be broadcast live in the U.S. on NBC and in Canada on Sportsnet and TVA Sports 2. In a year that celebrates the NHL's Centennial anniversary, this regular-season outdoor matchup will celebrate the 50th anniversary of both the Penguins and Flyers, who were introduced to the NHL as part of the six-team 1967 NHL expansion. As intrastate foes, the rivalry between these two clubs was natural and immediate, beginning with their first meeting in October 1967, which also was the first NHL game ever played at Philadelphia's famed Spectrum.
Since 1967, the Penguins and Flyers have met 278 times during the regular season (PIT: 97-144-37 = 231, PHI: 151-89-38 = 340). In addition, they have faced off in the Stanley Cup® Playoffs six-times, with Philadelphia holding a 4-2 series advantage, including a win in their most recent meeting in the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. The Penguins were victors in the only meeting between these two clubs this season, a 5-4 win on Oct. 29 at Wells Fargo Center. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia will face-off three more times in 2016-17, with the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ slated as their next matchup.
When these Metropolitan Division foes meet on Feb. 25, it will mark the fourth time the Penguins have skated outdoors in an NHL regular-season game (2008 AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic® at BUF; 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® vs. WSH; 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ at CHI). It will be the third time Philadelphia has faced-off outdoors (2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® at BOS; 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® vs. NYR).
NHL Network™ and NHL.com will provide extensive coverage live from the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic™ leading up to and after the game. NHL Social™ will provide coverage on all social platforms, including the use of the hashtag NHL#StadiumSeries.
