RALEIGH, NC - The Carolina Hurricanes'
READvolution
program, presented by the United Way of the Greater Triangle, will return for its second season beginning today. READvolution, which launched last season with the Wake County Public School System, is designed to increase child literacy amongst elementary school students. This season, READvolution will expand to include Chatham County Schools and Durham Public Schools, in addition to the Wake County Public School System. Carolina Hurricanes captain Justin Williams is the spokesman for the program this season and is featured in the PSA and kickoff videos.

"Literacy remains an important need in our community and we are excited to continue the READvolution program to help encourage reading in our community," Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell said. "We look forward to expanding READvolution into Chatham and Durham County schools, as well as beginning a second season with Wake County."
"Engaging our community - our parents, our families, our businesses, our organizations - in supporting our teachers and other educators is key to providing better learning experiences for our students," said Wake County Public School System Superintendent Cathy Moore. "The Carolina Hurricanes know this and have created a wonderful model for this type of engagement through READvolution. Reading is the gateway to all other learning, and getting students excited about it is golden."
"We are excited about our partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes that supports existing reading initiatives across our elementary schools," said Chatham County Schools Superintendent Dr. Derrick D. Jordan. "The research is clear that students who are not proficient in reading by third-grade face incredible hurdles throughout the rest of their time in school. Programs like READvolution offer extra incentives to encourage students meeting their daily reading goals."
"We're excited that the Hurricanes are committing so much energy into encouraging our youngest students to read more at home," said Durham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Pascal Mubenga. "Students who fall in love with reading thrive in the classroom for years to come."
The
READvolution
program requires 20 minutes of reading every day after school. Beginning on Sept. 24, students will be able to login online to track their reading times and books read. Students who meet the goal of 800 minutes read over the eight-week period will receive two free tickets to a Hurricanes home game. Schools that reach the 2,020-book goal qualify for the chance to attend the Cool School Field Trip at PNC Arena. The program runs from Sept. 24 through Nov. 16.
