Williams was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round (No. 28) of the 2000 NHL Draft and was traded to the Hurricanes for defenseman Danny Markov on Jan. 20, 2004.

Williams was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round (No. 28) of the 2000 NHL Draft and was traded to the Hurricanes for defenseman Danny Markov on Jan. 20, 2004.
He had back-to-back 30-goal seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and scored 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) during the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs to help the Hurricanes win their first championship.
After four-plus seasons, Williams was traded by the Hurricanes to the Los Angeles Kings. He scored 103 goals, 266 points and a plus-65 rating in 427 games while contributing to two Stanley Cup championships, including two goals and five points in three Game 7 wins during the 2014 playoffs.
Williams signed with the Washington Capitals as an unrestricted free agent on July 2, 2015 and played his 1,000th NHL game on April 10, 2016. After two seasons in Washington, Williams returned to Carolina and signed a two-year contract July 1, 2017.
On Sept. 2, 2019, Williams announced he was taking some time away from the NHL. He signed a one-year contract with the Hurricanes for the remainder of the 2019-20 season on Jan. 7, 2020.
