Tracking The Storylines
Starting Another Streak:After their season-opening nine-game win streak was cut short Saturday night in Florida, the team got back to their winning ways Tuesday night in Tampa. The win showcased the group's resiliency, being shut out by arguably the best netminder in the world (Andrei Vasilevskiy) for over 49 minutes of play before the team's power play finally broke through. While tonight the Canes hope it won't take until the third period to find the back of the net, they will be going for their second win in a row, which would advance their record to 11-1-0.
Discipline Is Key:Dating back to the team's win over Chicago on Wednesday, November 3, the Hurricanes have found themselves playing with fire at crucial points of the game. In that win, the team made it our victorious despite giving the Blackhawks eight minutes of power play time in the third period. Saturday in Sunrise the Panthers made them pay as Carolina offered them four power plays in the first period. Tuesday in Tampa the Lightning went on the power play twice in the opening period and then once again with just under six minutes to go in regulation. The group has come away with wins in two of the efforts, but as seen in the Florida game, teams can make them pay for affording those chances.
Beware of the Bounce Back:The Philadelphia Flyers were blanked on home ice by the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night, undoubtedly frustrating them. Goaltender Carter Hart was relatively strong throughout, with one of the goals against coming on a power play and another coming on a tough break following a kicking motion review. Jack Campbell of the Leafs stopped all 36 shots the Flyers placed on him, adding likely another element to the frustration, given that their ability to generate offense was certainly there. Watch for them to come out with some added jump tonight.
