THE QUICK HITS:
Last Time Out:
The Canes
nearly suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of the Flyers on Saturday
. A 2-0 first period lead was washed away by three unanswered from Philadelphia and it came just 24 hours after Carolina came out on the wrong side of a 6-2 score against the New York Islanders. Fortunately for Rod Brind'Amour's squad Martin Necas knotted the contest back up at 3-3 with just 2:05 remaining in the third and Brent Burns played hero in overtime. Antti Raanta was strong in a 26/29 performance behind it all for the group.

CAR@PHI: Burns buries a one-timer for overtime winner

Confident Neci:Necas' game-tying goal in the late stages of Saturday's contest gave him 10 points in eight games to start the year. Then adding an assist on the overtime winner, Necas' 11 points pace the team. Only 11 players league-wide have more than 11 points entering Monday's play.
Burnzie's Warming Up:The Canes' new #8 now has goals in consecutive games for Carolina, each a part of his three-game point streak. His game-winner on Saturday was his 10th overtime goal since the start of the 2014-15 season, the most by any defenseman in the NHL during that time.
The Jordans:One of the biggest reasons Carolina hung around in the game against Philadelphia was the work done by the line of Jordan Staal, Jordan Martinook and Jesper Fast. Staal earned his first of the year in the opening frame and Martinook chipped in his second, both by way of hard-working efforts. After Paul Stastny began the year on the left wing of Staal and Fast, Jordan Martinook appears to have now settled into the role.
Next Time We Do It Outside:Tonight is the first of two visits to Raleigh for the Caps this season, with the second one coming on Saturday, February 18th. The two will go head-to-head in the 2022 Navy Federal Credit Union Stadium Series then.
Injury Report: Defenseman Calvin de Haan (day-to-day) has missed the team's last three games. Forward Ondrej Kase has been in concussion protocol since October 13. Forward Derek Stepan left Saturday's victory after two periods of play. He blocked a shot and was ruled out with an upper-body injury. His status for tonight is unknown.
On The Other Side:New netminder Darcy Kuemper posted a 34-save shutout over the Nashville Predators on Saturday, his first as a member of the Capitals. In terms of scoring, Alexander Ovechkin leads the team with seven points through nine games. The team's victories have come against Montreal, Vancouver, Los Angeles, New Jersey and Nashville, while their losses have come to Boston, Toronto, Ottawa and Dallas.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
What Are We Wearing?:The Canes will be wearing their black uniforms tonight.
AFTER TODAY:
The Canes are scheduled to have practice days on Tuesday and Wednesday before taking off for Tampa. They'll then have their second back-to-back of the season, taking on the Bolts Thursday before coming home to take on the Sabres Friday.
