3-30

MONTREAL --This game was all about points.
One hundred points for Matthew Tkachuk.
Two huge points for the Florida Panthers.
Led by three goals and an assist from Tkachuk, the Panthers closed out their three-game trek through Canada with a 5-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.

Pocketing four points within a span of 48 hours after coming from behind to secure a 3-2 win in overtime against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, the Panthers (38-31-7) sit one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins (37-28-10) for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.
"Very important," Tkachuk said. "Back-to-backs, being able to get them both, was huge. We know where we're at right now, so we know how important these two points are each and every night. Very important one to end the road trip here in Columbus on Saturday."
Netting the first NHL goal of his career, Sean Farrell, a fourth-round pick of Montreal in 2020, opened the scoring for the Canadiens when he fired a shot on net from the left circle that just squeaked between Alex Lyon's pads and the post to make it 1-0 at 1:23 of the first period.
Lighting the lamp for the second time in less than 24 hours, Anton Lundell, who broke the ice just a minute into the win over Toronto, got the Panthers even when he crashed toward the net, slipped through two defenders and lifted a shot into the cage to make it 1-1 at 4:09.
With the Panthers on the power play in the second period, Tkachuk set up shop right on the doorstep before blasting a slot-pass from Sam Reinhart past Sam Montembeault to make it 2-1 at 3:59. Less than two minutes later, Tkachuk struck again when he sniped a shot from the right circle into the twine to extend Florida's lead to 3-1 at 5:57 with his 100th point of the campaign.

"It doesn't mean a whole lot if we don't make the playoffs," Tkachuk said of hitting triple digits again. "I'm sure, maybe, being able to reflect on it, it's obviously a pretty cool milestone. I'm surrounded by so many great teammates.
"I can't thank everybody enough from Vinnie [Viola], Bill [Zito], Paul [Maurice], the coaching staff and all the players that have made the adjustment for me very, very easy to come to a new team and have some fun."
Full of confidence after finding the back of the net earlier in the contest, Lundell struck again in the third period when he forced a turnover in the offensive before beating Montembeault on a breakaway with a quick deke and finish to put the Panthers on top 4-1 at 10:15.
After the Canadiens pulled Montembeault to gain a 6-on-4 advantage on a late power play, Rafael Harvey-Pinard re-directed a shot from Mike Hoffman past Lyon from the slot to cut Florida's lead down to 4-2 at 18:35.
But with 20 seconds left in regulation, Tkachuk stifled Montreal's would-be comeback attempt when he cashed in on the empty net to complete his hat trick and safely lock down the 5-2 win.
"We can scoreboard watch as much as we want, but at the end of the day you're not going to make it unless you win your own games," said Tkachuk, who also set a new franchise record for the most multi-point games in a season with 32. "We're just trying to take care of our business."
Making his second consecutive start after racking up 38 saves against the Maple Leafs, Lyon stood tall once again for the Panthers while turning aside 18 of 20 shots between the pipes.
"It was awesome," Lyon said. "We handled business tonight. That's what it felt like. If you want to do damage at this time of the year, you have to be able to do that sometimes and control the game. I tought tonight we controlled the game as well as I've seen since I've been up here."

CATS QUOTES

"He could've had one or two more. I think for young players [a slump] weighs on them more because they don't have the experience of what it takes to get out of a tough stretch, and it was weighing on him, for sure. He's got hands around the net. The breakaway goal just shows what he can do." -- Paul Maurice on Anton Lundell's recent scoring surge
"It's tough games. We need to battle. We need to get points in every game. Everybody knows it. We're just going to try to enjoy the game of hockey. Just give everything and see what the result is." -- Anton Lundell on the team's mindset down the homestretch
