What We Learned

Here are key takeaways from Wednesday:

Sabres could be powering up

The Buffalo Sabres had one goal in 24 power-play attempts against the Boston Bruins in the first round. They had two in three attempts in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Second Round against the Montreal Canadiens, a 4-2 win at KeyBank Center. So, is it time to stop asking about the ineffectiveness of the power play? Please don’t, said forward Ryan McLeod, who scored the first of the two extra-man goals. Defenseman Bowen Byram had the other. “I mean, maybe keep asking if we're going to keep scoring now,” McLeod said, laughing. “So, yeah, I think we're working on it every day. And sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. But it's a process of building it and getting your looks. For the playoffs, the Sabres are at 11.1 percent, nothing to write home about. But Wednesday, they were at 66 percent, a more palatable number. “One series is over, on to the next, and we have two in this series already, so it’s going well,” forward Josh Doan said. -- Shawn P. Good luck against the Vegas PK

The Anaheim Ducks went 8-for-16 on the power play against the Edmonton Oilers in their six-game win in the Western Conference First Round, but they have gone 0-for-9 against the Vegas Golden Knights through two games in the second round. They went 0-for-4 in Game 1, a 3-1 loss, and 0-for-5 in Game 2, a 3-1 win. In Game 2, they had 6:38 of 5-on-4 and 1:41 of 5-on-3 time. “The penalty kill has been fantastic,” Vegas coach John Tortorella said. The Golden Knights are 24-for-25 on the PK in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. -- Nicholas J. Cotsonika, columnist
