How Blues won Stanley Cup

The St. Louis Blues won their first Stanley Cup championship with a 4-1 win against the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on June 12.

St. Louis defeated the Winnipeg Jets in six games in the Western Conference First Round and the Dallas Stars in seven games in the second round. The Blues advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1970 by defeating the San Jose Sharks in six games in the Western Conference Final.
Here's a look at the Blues' road to the Stanley Cup:
April 10: Game 1, Western Conference First Round, Bell MTS Place: Blues 2, Jets 1
Patrik Laine gave the Jets a 1-0 lead 13:28 into the first period before the Blues came back in the third. David Perron tied it 1-1 at 4:05, and Tyler Bozak scored with 2:05 left to make it 2-1. Blues rookie goalie Jordan Binnington made 24 saves, including all 18 shots he faced after the first period.

April 12: Game 2, Western Conference First Round, Bell MTS Place: Blues 4, Jets 3
The Blues took a 1-0 lead 5:23 into the first period on a goal by Oskar Sundqvist before Blake Wheeler scored at 12:01 to tie it 1-1. Laine's power-play goal at 2:49 of the second period gave the Jets a 2-1 lead, but Patrick Maroon scored less than four minutes later to tie it 2-2 at 6:42, and Sundqvist's second of the game at 9:50 gave the Blues a 3-2 lead. Mark Scheifele's power-play goal with 1:05 left in the second made it 3-3. Ryan O'Reilly's first goal of the playoffs 3:46 into the third made it 4-3, adding to the Blues' series lead.

April 14: Game 3, Western Conference First Round, Enterprise Center: Jets 6, Blues 3
The Blues took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Perron with 48 seconds remaining in the first period, but the Jets scored three in the second: Kevin Hayes (4:57), Laine (7:47) and Kyle Connor (8:58) for a 3-1 lead. Vladimir Tarasenko's power-play goal 1:51 into the third period made it 3-1 before Brandon Tanev (4:25) and Dustin Byfuglien (8:06) gave the Jets a 5-2 lead. Alexander Steen got the Blues within 5-3 at 13:42, but Connor scored 1:02 later to help Winnipeg get its first win of the series.

After no scoring in the first two periods, the teams traded goals in the third. Tarasenko scored on a power play at 35 seconds for a 1-0 lead, and Scheifele's goal at 7:33 tied it 1-1. Connor gave the Jets the win and tied the series by scoring at 6:02 of overtime. Binnington made 37 saves for the Blues.

April 18: Game 5, Western Conference First Round, Bell MTS Place: Blues 3, Jets 2
The Blues rallied with a three-goal, third-period comeback to take the lead in the series. Adam Lowry gave the Jets a 1-0 lead 12 seconds into the first period and Hayes made it 2-0 at 13:35. O'Reilly got the Blues within 2-1 with a power-play goal at 1:29 of the third period, and Brayden Schenn's goal with 6:08 remaining tied it 2-2. Jaden Schwartz scored the tiebreaking goal with 15 seconds left to give the Blues their third road win of the series.

April 20: Game 6, Western Conference First Round, Enterprise Center: Blues 3, Jets 2
Schwartz scored a natural hat trick with goals in the first period (23 seconds), second (12:36) and third (3:55) to give the Blues a 3-0 lead. Byfuglien scored with 7:43 remaining to make it 3-1, and Bryan Little scored a shorthanded goal with the Jets goalie pulled with 38 seconds left to make it 3-2. Binnington made 18 saves to help the Blues advance to the second round.

April 25: Game 1, Western Conference Second Round, Enterprise Center: Blues 3, Stars 2
Robby Fabbri gave the Blues a 1-0 lead at 5:57 of the first period before the teams each scored once in the second. Jason Spezza tied it 1-1 at 10:25, and Tarasenko's power-play goal at 18:03 gave the Blues a 2-1 lead. Tarasenko scored again at 3:51 of the third to make it 3-1. Jamie Benn's power-play goal got the Stars within 3-2 with 2:17 remaining but he fanned on a chance to tie the game in the final seconds with the puck loose in the crease.

April 27: Game 2, Western Conference Second Round, Enterprise Center: Stars 4, Blues 2
The Stars scored three times on 10 shots to take a 3-1 lead in the first period. Roope Hintz (7:11) and Miro Heiskanen (13:39) made it 2-0 before Colton Parayko's goal at 14:25 got St. Louis within 2-1. Mattias Janmark made it 3-1 26 seconds later. Schwartz gave the Blues life, scoring at 1:48 of the third period to get them within 3-2, but Hintz capped the scoring with his second of the game with three seconds remaining to tie the series.

April 29: Game 3, Western Conference Second Round, American Airlines Center: Blues 4, Stars 3
The Blues blew three one-goal leads before they won their fourth straight postseason road game. Schwartz scored 1:27 into the first period for a 1-0 lead, and Alexander Radulov tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 17:12. Bozak gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead at 8:30 of the second before Andrew Cogliano's shorthanded goal at 13:06 of the third tied it 2-2. Alex Pietrangelo's first goal of the playoffs gave the Blues a 3-2 lead at 14:24, but Tyler Seguin scored 1:28 later to tie it again, 3-3. Maroon scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:38 remaining for the 4-3 win and series lead.

May 1: Game 4, Western Conference Second Round, American Airlines Center: Stars 4, Blues 2
Tarasenko gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 5:02 into the first period, but the Stars scored the next four, including two in the first period by Jason Dickinson (11:23) and Spezza (19:08) for a 2-1 lead. John Klingberg (9:26) and Hintz (17:28) gave the Stars a 4-1 lead in the second period. Robert Thomas got the Blues within 4-2 at 13:44 of the third period, but the Blues lost a road game for the first time in the playoffs and the series was tied.

May 3: Game 5, Western Conference Second Round, Enterprise Center: Stars 2, Blues 1
The Blues were shut out for the first 48 minutes and trailed 2-0 after goals by Spezza at 2:42 of the first period and Eda Lindell at 6:13 of the second. Schwartz made it 2-1 with 11:34 remaining in the third, but the Blues left trailing the series despite 15 of their 39 shots on goal coming in the third period.

May 5: Game 6, Western Conference Second Round, American Airlines Center: Blues 4, Stars 1
Facing elimination on the road, the Blues took a 2-1 lead into the third period after a goal by Perron at 15:24 of the second. Schwartz made it 3-1 at 7:37 of the third and Sammy Blais gave the Blues a 4-1 lead 33 seconds later. Binnington made 22 saves to even the series.

After the teams each scored in the first period, with Vince Dunn giving the Blues a 1-0 lead at 13:30 and Mats Zuccarello tying it 1-1 at 15:55, neither team scored through the first overtime. The Blues outshot the Stars 44-17 after the first period, but Ben Bishop made 52 saves to keep Dallas in the game. He was unable to stop Maroon's wrist shot at 5:50 of the second overtime that sent the Blues to the conference final for the first time since 2016.

May 11: Game 1, Western Conference Final, SAP Center: Sharks 6, Blues 3
Timo Meier and Logan Couture each scored two goals with an assist for the Sharks, who scored twice in the first period and three times in the second. Couture made it 1-0 at 3:31 of the first, and Joel Edmundson scored at 9:13 to tie it 1-1. Joe Pavelski's power-play goal at 11:24 made it 2-1, and Kevin Labanc made it 3-1 at 7:41 of the second before O'Reilly scored at 8:58 to make it 3-2. Meier scored at 10:24 and at 17:34 of the second to make it 5-2. Bozak got the Blues within 5-3 at 13:01 of the third period, but Couture's second with 2:21 left and the net empty put the game out of reach at 6-3.

May 13: Game 2, Western Conference Final, SAP Center: Blues 4, Sharks 2
Robert Bortuzzo's first Stanley Cup Playoff goal, in his 31st game, made it 3-2 with 3:26 remaining in the second period. Schwartz gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead 2:34 into the first period before Dunn made it 2-0 at 4:16 of the second. Couture scored a shorthanded goal 39 seconds later and scored at 6:54 to tie it 2-2. Sundqvist's goal with 3:08 left made it 4-2 and the series was even.

The Blues trailed by two goals twice before getting to overtime. Erik Karlsson (13:37) and Joe Thornton (16:58) put the Sharks up 2-0 in the first period. Steen scored at 1:18 of the second period to make it 2-1 before Thornton's second goal 18 seconds later made it 3-1. The Blues then scored three straight goals: Tarasenko at 4:05, and Perron at 16:03 and at 18:42 for a 4-3 lead. With Sharks goalie Martin Jones pulled for an extra attacker, Couture tied it 4-4 with 1:01 left in the third period. Karlsson scored at 5:23 of overtime to give San Jose the series lead.

May 17: Game 4, Western Conference Final, Enterprise Center: Blues 2, Sharks 1
The Blues got off to a fast start when Ivan Barbashev scored 35 seconds in for a 1-0 lead. Bozak made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 17:53. Tomas Hertl made it 2-1, scoring a power-play goal at 6:48 of the third period. Binnington made 29 saves to even the series.

May 19: Game 5, Western Conference Final, SAP Center: Blues 5, Sharks 0
Schwartz scored a hat trick, and Binnington made 21 saves for his first Stanley Cup Playoff shutout. Sundqvist scored at 5:50 of the first period to make it 1-0, and Schwartz (3:05) and Tarasenko (6:53) scored in the second period for a 3-0 lead. Schwartz scored a power-play goal at 2:19 of the third period and completed his hat trick at 16:02 to make it 5-0, with the Blues taking the series lead.

May 21: Game 6, Western Conference Final, Enterprise Center: Blues 5, Sharks 1
Perron scored at 1:32 of the first period for a 1-0 lead, and Tarasenko's power-play goal made it 2-0 at 16:16. Dylan Gambrell got the Sharks within 2-1 at 6:40 of the second period. Schenn scored a power-play goal at 12:47 to make it 3-1. Bozak (13:05) and Barbashev (17:45) scored in the third period to make it 5-1 and send the Blues to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1970.

May 27: Game 1, Stanley Cup Final, TD Garden: Bruins 4, Blues 2
The Blues took a 2-0 lead 21 minutes into the game on goals by Schenn in the first period (7:23) and Tarasenko in the second (1:00). Connor Clifton's second of the playoffs at 2:16 got the Bruins within 2-1 before Charlie McAvoy's power-play goal at 12:42 of the second tied it 2-2. Sean Kuraly scored the game-winner 5:21 into the third period, and Brad Marchand scored an empty-net goalie with 1:49 remaining for the 4-2 final.

After going 0-13 in the Cup Final, the Blues won their first, coming back from down one goal twice. Charlie Coyle's power-play goal 4:44 into the first gave Boston a 1-0 lead, but Bortuzzo scored less than five minutes later to tie it 1-1 at 9:37. Joakim Nordstrom scored 40 seconds after that to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Tarasenko extended his point streak to eight games and his goal streak to four at 14:55 to tie it 2-2. After no goals were scored in the second and third periods, the game went to overtime. The Blues outshot the Bruins 4-0 and Carl Gunnarsson's first NHL playoff goal, in his 57th game, won it at 3:51 and evened the series.

June 1: Game 3, Stanley Cup Final, Enterprise Center: Bruins 7, Blues 2
The Blues trailed 3-0 in the first period and 5-1 in the second to fall behind in the series. St. Louis allowed four power-play goals on four shots, including four points by Bruins defenseman Torey Krug (one goal, three assists). Seven players scored for Boston, and Binnington was pulled for the first time in the playoffs after allowing five goals on 19 shots in 32:12. Jake Allen made three saves on four shots in his first game of the postseason, and Barbashev and Parayko scored for the Blues.

June 3: Game 4, Stanley Cup Final, Enterprise Center: Blues 4, Bruins 2
O'Reilly scored 43 seconds into the first period for a 1-0 lead. Coyle tied it 1-1 at 13:14 before Tarasenko's goal at 15:30 gave the Blues a 2-1 lead. Brandon Carlo scored a shorthanded goal at 14:19 of the second period for a 2-2 tie. O'Reilly's second of the game at 10:38 of the third period made it 3-2. Schenn added an empty-net goal with 1:39 remaining, and Binnington made 21 saves to bounce back to even the series after being pulled in Game 3.

June 6: Game 5, Stanley Cup Final, TD Garden: Blues 2, Bruins 1
After neither team scored in the first period, O'Reilly gave the Blues a 1-0 lead 55 seconds into the second period. Perron made it 2-0 at 10:36 of the third period. Jake DeBrusk's goal at 13:32 made it 2-1, but Binnington made 38 saves to preserve the series-leading win for St. Louis and tie the rookie record for most playoff wins in one postseason (15).

June 9: Game 6, Stanley Cup Final, Enterprise Center: Bruins 5, Blues 1
A four-goal third period by the Bruins ended any chance of the Blues winning their first championship at home. Marchand scored a power-play goal at 8:40 of the first period to give Boston a 1-0 lead. After neither team scored in the second, Brandon Carlo (2:31) and Karson Kuhlman (10:15) made it 3-0 before O'Reilly's goal at 12:01 got the Blues within 3-1. David Pastrnak made it 4-1 at 14:06, and Zdeno Chara's empty-net goal at 17:41 sealed the 5-1 win and tied the series.

June 12: Game 7, Stanley Cup Final, TD Garden: Blues 4, Bruins 1

Pietrangelo had a goal and an assist, and O'Reilly scored for the fourth straight game to help the Blues win the Stanley Cup for the first time. O'Reilly made it 1-0 at 16:47 of the first period, and Pietrangelo's goal with eight seconds remaining in the period gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead. Schenn made it 3-0 at 11:25 of the third period, and Zach Sanford's first NHL playoff goal at 15:22 made it 4-0. Matt Grzelcyk scored at 2:10 to make it 4-1. Binnington won his 16th game of the playoffs, setting a rookie record; he made 32 saves. O'Reilly, who had 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in the postseason, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs.
