Tanev was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Winnipeg Jets on March 30, 2016 after his senior season at Providence College. One year earlier, he scored the goal that gave Providence its first NCAA championship.
Tanev played three late-season games with Winnipeg, then spent most of the 2016-17 season with the Jets, finishing with four points (two goals, two assists) in 51 games. Tanev increased his offensive numbers the next season, scoring 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 61 games. That included his first NHL hat trick March 27, 2018, against the Boston Bruins. Tanev also had six points (four goals, two assists) in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

He had 14 goals and 29 points in 80 games for the Jets in 2018-19, then signed a six-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 1, 2019.
His older brother, Christopher Tanev, is a defenseman with the Vancouver Canucks.
