Barbashev was selected No. 1 by Moncton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in the 2012 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft and had 62 points (18 goals, 44 assists) in 68 games the following season.
In 2013-14, the Moscow native had 68 points (25 goals, 43 assists) in 48 games with Moncton and was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the second round (No. 33) in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Barbashev played one more season with Moncton, finishing with 95 points (45 goals, 50 assists) in 57 games before he made his professional debut with Chicago of the American Hockey League in 2015-16. That season, he had 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 65 games.
In 2016-17, Barbashev began the season with Chicago and had 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists) in 46 games. He was recalled by St. Louis and made his NHL debut in a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 26, 2017. He scored his first NHL goal in a 6-0 win against the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 7 and finished with 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 30 games.
Barbashev played 80 games in 2018-19 and set NHL career highs with 14 goals, 12 assists and 26 points, then contributed six points (three goals, three assists) in 25 games during the Blues' run to their first Stanley Cup championship.
