Flyers team scope

The Philadelphia Flyers got their 20th victory by defeating the Washington Capitals 3-2 in a shootout at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday. The Flyers didn't get their 20th win last season until Jan. 17. Philadelphia is 11-1-1 in its past 13 games but had lost two in a row after a 10-game win streak. "It's good to get back in the win column," goaltender Steve Mason said. "You go on a 10-game win streak and you can't let it slide. Two losses in a row there, you can't let it slide. That would counteract everything we'd done in the winning streak." Mason made 36 saves against the Capitals, his fourth-highest total this season. The Flyers are 4-3 in the shootout. "We're gonna need goaltending sometimes," defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere said. "[Mason] stood up big for us and we're happy we could help him out there in the shootout." Mason will make his fifth straight start. Rookie goaltender Anthony Stolarz grew up in Jackson, New Jersey as a Devils fan; his last appearance came in a 1-0 victory at the Detroit Red Wings on Dec. 11, in the second half of a back-to-back. The Flyers have killed off 16 straight penalties in their past six games.

Devils team scope

The New Jersey Devils have lost seven in a row (0-6-1) and have been outscored 29-9 during that stretch. The last time the Devils were without a win in seven straight was 2013-14 (0-4-3). General manager Ray Shero told NorthJersey.com on Wednesday that coach John Hynes remains the right man to coach the Devils and that the players need to play harder. Hynes responded to that following New Jerssey's morning skate: "We're trying to become a very competitive team in the League and a team that's relevant and in order to do that the work and compete has to come first," he said. "In the times where we haven't played harder enough, there hasn't been consistent puck battles, we're not skating, and we're easy to play against in the sense of just general compete. When a puck comes up the wall on a breakout and it's a wing against a defender, we can't get easily pushed off the puck. Those are things [Shero] talked about." The Devils recalled defenseman Seth Helgeson from Albany of the American Hockey League and he will make his NHL season debut. In four games against the Flyers, Helgeson has two assists and is plus-1.
