Greene signed with the New Jersey Devils as an undrafted free agent April 4, 2006 after four seasons with Miami (Ohio) University.
He split the 2006-07 season between Lowell of the American Hockey League and New Jersey, which included his NHL debut against the Atlanta Thrashers on Jan. 12, 2007. He scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 23 NHL games.

Greene set NHL career highs in assists (31) and points (37) in 2009-10 and signed a four-year contract with the Devils on July 1, 2011. He helped New Jersey reach the 2012 Stanley Cup Final, signed a five-year contract July 30, 2014 and was named Devils captain prior to the start of the 2015-16 season.
Greene was traded to the Islanders on Feb. 16, 2020. He had three assists in 10 games for New York before the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
